Recently Acquired Stevens "Walnut Hill" in 25rf.

First, thanks for approving me into the group. Just acquired a Stevens in 25rf. It was advertised as a Walnut Hill and has some of the attributes, but no specific markings.

On the lower tang under the lever is the number 231, same number is stamped on the back of the steel butt plate. Has the words 'Trademark, Stevens & patent info' on the left side of the receiver. There are no other markings on the receiver, nothing on the front or the top. Barrel has Stevens with location and caliber, nothing else. Has 4 screws towards breech end, but no dovetail for a rear sight.

Looking for any information on it. Nice gun and there was an identical one just sold on Gun Broker. It had a rear dovetail and the tang sight with it. If the purchaser is on here, would like to talk with you.

OK, this will be my first normal post, will post the pictures next.

Its a 418 1/2 Walnut Hill Junior Sporting Model. The rear sight should be a Lyman 2A. They were unmarked as to model name or number. It is basically a Favorite on steroids. It was available in .22 Long Rifle, .22 WRF, and .25 Stevens. .22 Long Rifle was the most common and the .22 WRF seems to be the hardest to find. Don't see many .25 Stevens either. The 418 1/2 Walnut Hill Junior Target Model is the same gun with a Lyman 144 rear sight that was made specifically for the Walnut Hill 417 and 418. It was offered in .22 Long Rifle with .22 Short available for an extra charge. Neat guns and very accurate as are most Stevens. I managed to collect all the calibers. Just recently came up with a .22 WRF. Good find on your part. I have a copy of the original sales brochure that I would be glad to mail to you if you PM me with an address. Hope this helps.

Les, if you want to make it a shooter:
* Bush the block for a new CF firing pin
* CH4D 25 Hornet Dies
* Reform 22 Hornet cases to 25 Hornet
* Ly10man 257420 FNGC - 72gr
* 2.1gr Unique - 10gr Goex CTG
I did this to a 25 Stevens Favorite - cases drop in and pleased with the accuracy

So it doesn't need to be rechambered to .25 Hornet when doing this conversion? Still uses the .25 Stevens chambering?

TEN grains Unique?   Shocked   That won't even fit in the case.  THREE grains  might be safe in a Favorite frame.

You can work up a CF version of the .25 Stevens case from Hornet brass. It's a lot of work, but would be much safer than the .25 Hornet.

10 grains Unique is more than a double charge in the 25WCF.

If you want to shoot the rifle, convert it to .22RF . Stay happy stay healthy.

Yup.  Easy enough to make a replacement barrel in .22LR.  The .25 firing pin will usually strike enough of the rim of a .22 to fire it, so modifying the breechblock isn't necessary.

My error on the Unique charge for the 25 Stevens.  Edited the original post.  The 10gr is for Goex CTG
It's 2.1gr Unique or 10gr Goex CTG compressed
The Goex charge chronographs at 1041 fps
Also 1.5gr of Trail Boss.
The Unique & TB reloads have not been chronographed yet.  Have to lengthen the firing pin because am getting sporadic light hits

No changes were made to the Favorite chamber using the 25 Hornet cases

The .25 Hornet has a larger base diameter, larger rim, and is longer than the .25 Stevens.   How do you do it ?

They fit the chamber perfectly - shoot well and extract with ease.  The Favorite possibly could have had the chamber reamed - I don't know.  If you remember the original post about this rifle, the barrel had an original lettering - 25 Stevens and with a different punch the letters CF = 25 Stevens CF
Phil - here's all I did:

Looks like a couple of posts have disappeared.

For the record, John, those dies you are using have to be .25 Stevens, not .25 Hornet.  Hence the confusion.  I see that CH4D does list them.  Good to know that.   Makes converting a .25 RF much, much easier.

Remaining question is: The .25 Stevens RF has a groove diameter of .250, (nominal).   Yet you are using a .257 bullet ??

Now, last year I acquired a Model 44 barrel chambered and marked .25 Stevens, but the groove diameter was .257, with a 14 inch twist.  It was clearly made by Stevens, and is essentially new.  I've assumed all along that it was a .25-20 blank that got mis-chambered, and was unique.

Could it be that you have another one like that?  If there's more than one, where did they come from?  Inquiring minds....

Phil

I had a unmolested 44 in 25/20ss, It had a bore of .250 (measured with pin gages) and a groove of .254.

Ideal manuals list the 25 RF with a .256 - .257 groove.

So, I think you can find a lot of different groove diameters for all the Stevens 25's.
