32-40 Bushing sizer?

Guys, since I have shifted to loading fixed ammo for my 32-40, I am using RCBS FL sizer die, unthreaded a ways to partially neck size the cases, then running a BACO expander to open the case mouth, and then seating bullets to have a press fit into the tapered portion of the throat of the rifle.

I've been thinking... (???)

What if I bought an appropriate bushing for my 308 bushing sizer die, and threaded it into the press enough to size the case necks of the 32-40 just enough? Might save the significant compression of the case necks by the standard RCBS 32-40 FL sizer die? Then run the BACO expander on in?

Your partially right. One of the ideas behind using a bushing die is to minimize the working of the neck diameter.  Ideally  what you want to do is to just reduce the neck diameter only to the point to give you a specific diameter on the inside in relation to your bullet diameter. Many would probably say that you want the inside diameter about .002" under the bullet diameter.  With only that much reduction a good chamfer on the case mouth  and you shouldn't need to expand the case mouth. Thus you would want a bushing diameter of (bullet diameter - .002)+ (neck wall thickness x 2).

Since I've taken to piddling with fixed in that caliber, I do about the same as you have been doing. One reason I ceased with the neck bushing and went back to using a large expander is to get the inside of the neck uniform- not the outside. If all case neck thickness were identical, the outside neck sizing would be ideal- but, alas, my cases are from different eras, makers and lots. So, the inside work makes more consistent loads for me. 
I do use a good chamfer on them, and only have about a thou or two tension, depending on bullet size. Been workin' pretty good.

You can buy a barrel lap and lap your FL die to give you the right diameter.

If you want the case necks to have a uniform thickness and inside diameter you can turn them just like bench rest shooters do.
