I just bought a new Highwall.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); Since it's not vintage like most of you shoot, I'm wondering if you have any advice for breaking in the new barrel.  I've always been told "just shoot it".  But I found this information a long while back:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); and am  not quite sure which direction to go.  I'll be shooting lead, but will be using smokeless powders.  (I know, I know, but I've not come to the dark side quite yet.)   Roll Eyes  Any help or comments would be much appreciated.

* The break in procedure link will work with lead bullets.   Don't over rev the powder charges.

Thanks, John.  They've taken down the listing now, so neither link works.  Won't get to see any more pics of my "beauty" until I've got it in my hands.

I'm a target shooter, not a steel critter killer.  I don't load heavy. (typical .38-55 charge is 10 gr Unique under a .240 gr RNFP pill.)

Thanks.  Wish I knew how to download them to my computer.  I confess I'm computer illiterate!  It's going to be a week or more before I get to see it in person and those pics would tide me over, I think. Smiley

Just go to the site, left click on picture then right click and a drop down should show up with a save image as one of the options. I tried your gun and it worked for me.

Thanks, Joe.  I'm bustin' my buttons on this end.  Mighty happy with my choice and can't wait to see it in person.  Then starts the fun...............but then I don't need to go into detail on that because everyone on the forum knows exactly what I mean!

Breaking in a new barrel for a plain-based bullet rifle is not like breaking in a rifle that shoots jacketed bullets; they are two different animals and need different methods to break them in.
A plain-based bullet rifle has a lot more in common with a .22 rimfire than your hunting rifle. First make your self a bore guide. This is easy simply drill out a case to accept your cleaning rod. For cleaning I use a brush with a patch wrapped around in you can use what you like but this has worked for me for years. Second use a solvent that is made to remove lead not copper, Stay away from aggressive copper solvents like Sweets. Use Hoppies or I use Eds Red you can make a years worth of Eds Red for a couple of bucks and it works great.  To start shooting run a patch coated with lanolin down your bore to coat the bore. Shoot 10 shots, clean and another patch of lanolin. Keep doing that the first day. After that when you clean make your last patch lanolin for a couple of months. When you clean stop after you get the fouling out when you see some cooked lube on the patch stop. You don’t want a squeaky clean barrel you want some of your lube on the bore to condition it.

Thanks, 40_Rod, much appreciated.  That's different from any of the other recommendations I've received so far from friends who shoot only lead, or on any forum.  That's why I like to ask lots of questions when I don't know how to do something.  If I can't figure out an answer from the responses, then I'm pretty dumb.  Thanks again.
