Open up spruce plate cutter hole ?

I know adding a little more tin will help fill out a mold better , but what about opening up the diameter of the spruce cuter plate hole ? Any thoughts . Thanks

I don't think enlarging the sprue plate hole is the answer to your problem. If the hole becomes to big and it does not take much it will no longer cleanly shear / cut the sprue off but it will tend to smear it off and push lead off to the side of the base also creating bullet inbalance. Could you more clearly define what you mean by filling out the bullet, if it is just the base you are having trouble with you can simply and very slightly break the top edge of both halves of the mould blocks with a fine stone at a 45 degree angle. It will more times than not cure that problem by venting any trapped air at the base that might be keeping it from filling out. You do not want to over do it and if so alloy will flow in the V channel created by the stoning on each side of the base.

Yes, fill base of bullet better for a sharper base edge .

I finally solved a problem with incomplete base fill-out in a .25 caliber mould by ignoring the time-honored Pope protocol, and instead took to pouring the lead into the cavity and over the sprue plate to keep it hot.     YMMV of course.

Agree with JLoius that enlarging the hole will bring you nothing but trouble.   I've made that mistake myself.

I pressure pour out of the bottom of the pot. It totally fills out the base band.

If you ladle pour, get a larger ladle, RCBS or larger. Pour with it in contact with the sprue plate.

There is nothing wrong with having the bases completely filled out. It will actually give you a better balanced bullet, if there is no fining. If your not very experiance in pouring, those rounded base bands can be uneven.

With pressure pouring, you have to watch your temp. If it gets to hot, it will flow into the vent lines.

With pressure pouring, I use as small as .086 sprue holes when I make my sprue plates.

If you are using a ladle I would raise my alloy temp and try turning the mould and ladle at different speeds. I have a couple moulds that like to be rotated much faster than recomended or I get a rounded base. I also dip the sprue ear into the pot to keep the sprue plate hot on some moulds.

making a good big sprue each cast tends to keep the sprue plate hotter.
this helps keep the bases filled out.
casting at 750 to 800 degrees is a good place to start.
keep safe,
bruce.

One of the most common mistakes of new shooters when Molding is the paying of a lot of attention to the bullets as they drop them on the Towel or Pad they use. If you are stopping and rolling the Bullets around to see how good they are filled you are losing Mold and Sprue plate temperature. I have found that when  starting and having the Alloy up to a good temperature I just start casting and get a good rhythm going and only glance at the bullets as they drop out. When I see that they appear to be filling out nicely I then clean up the Pad and start looking at the Base as I push open the Sprue and if the base is filled out nice then start saving. At this point I just keep on going as quickly as I can just looking at the base as the sprue plate is clear. A good quick cycle will produce the most consistent weight and an accurate reproduction of the cavity. The other issue is bullet finish on the outside. Lots of people want bright shiny bullets and strive for that condition. I have found that getting a good cycle going that produces a slightly frosty condition also is a good indicator of good Mold fill. When you see indications of getting some vestige of Venting lines trying to fill you know you are getting the most complete fill of the Mold cavity possible. HTH Regards, FITZ Smiley

jlouis,
consistent edges is the best.
if you get some round and some a different round it won't be good.
this will happen if the mould is meant for square edges and you are casting for round ones.
round edges caused by a fully filled mould designed for that is a different thing.
while rounded bases from a square based mould might shoot ok at close range, they can disappoint at creedmoor ranges of 800, 900, and 1000 yds.
you can get fully filled moulds at 750 to 800 degrees and no frosting that weigh +/- 0.2 gns for 540ish grain bullets by having a consistent technique.
some moulds are different than others and you need to learn how to drive them.
often they require a count of 3 from being on their side to upright as you pour with a ladle, and others need to be stood up quite quickly.
a friend creates sprues that are an artform, all in order to keep the sprue plate hot in order to get good fillout. a good thing to learn from him.
keep safe,
bruce.

Keeping things constant is important in casting good bullets. Regardless of the type of base, or whether it's sharp or not. Some filled, and some not, makes for inconsistent bullets, and accuracy. It's more about them all being the same.
This applies to pouring your bullets. Do it the same way and continue at a cadence that keeps things at the same temperature. I don't stop casting until I either run out of space to drop bullets out of the mold, or I have enough cast. If I have to stop during the casting process for a couple minutes to make space on my towel, I leave the last bullet in the mold to retain temperature. Then drop the bullet and continue casting. Once I'm done, I sort bullets and drop the ugly ones back in the pot.

I, too, cast with a very generous puddle on my plates. I was taught to cast ages ago by an old pal. When I appologized for making such a mess of lead on his mold, he told me that was the best beginner's technique he knew of. I'm apparently still a beginner, since decades later, I still make a big gob on the sprue plate. I cast hot from a large pot, and try to keep my pace as even as possible. My towels are stacked so when one gets loaded, I just move it and use the fresh one that is below. Then, my back starts to get stiff- but that's another story.
