JP , no I do not know anyone casting from my particular Hoch mold, although I'am sure someone is ? I'am sure the bullets would be very costly . Call CPA rifles and talked to them about a mold for your rifle, that is where I bought mine . If you do not want to scrounge lead you can order pre-mixed lead alloys from a place call Roto Metals, they will ship to your house . Try teaching yourself how to cast. Casting will add to your hobby . Plenty of good books and help from this forum on the subject . If you only shoot a few bullets a year then I would not cast my own . Thanks

thanks for the Roto Metals tip. Prices and selection are pretty good. I don't shoot that many bullets right now but I hope to in a few years when I retire. Guess, I'd better learn how to cast!

try pulling one of your bullets after you have seated it in the case. To tight of a neck may be making your bullets under sized . Black powder would bump it back up but not the smokeless .
Dales
I fairly certain they're not too tight but I'll pull one just to be sure. Thanks.

In the jacketed-bullet world, the congealed wisdom when a bullet isn't quite stabilizing is to push it faster.   You don't tell us what your groups look like, though.  How does the load do at 100 yards? Or 200?   Not familiar with that bullet - plain base or gas checked?   BHN 15 isn't all that soft.  Are you measuring hardness, or guessing?

Groups are nothing to write home about (3" +) and didn't try anything beyond 50 yards. I just assumed that longer distances would be worse. The bullet base is plain and the advertised hardness is 15 but I don't have the means to actually measure it.

Since it shoots BP just fine, I think I'd shoot a few shots at 100 or even 200 to see if this is some sort of strange anomaly at 50.

JP, if you use standard loading dies, the case is likely to be too tight- expander is usually for jacketed bullets. I expand with a bigger ball, or don't size at all. Depends on bullet diameter. As for the crimp, that will wreck your bullet before it even gets going. Good luck.

JP since you are currently using bullets cast by a commercial caster this may not interest you , however I failed to mentioned that my bullets from the Saeco mold never had nice sharp crisp edges like the bullets from the Hoch mold . Today I went to the range and I had no tipping or keyholes . What I did was to add a little more tin to my mix and I guess it filled the mold out more completely and the base edges are a little more sharp or crisp . Like everyone say's , " the accuracy is in the base of the bullet ."  Do the bullets from your caster have nice sharp/crisp edges ? If not they are probably not going to fly very well . Just a thought ? Thanks

Don't know if this will help or not, but I am loading fixed ammo with the Saeco 200 grain tapered bullet for use in "cowboy silhouette". I bought a custom expander plug from BACO to ease the .324" base band into the case. It makes the loading of ammo easier. I seat the bullets just a skosh long, and they fit the tapered throat just fine, and seat themselves in the case just a little deeper upon chambering.

My testing is only preliminary. Nonetheless, it is a smoother operation than the standard .320" RCBS expander plug that comes with the die set.

YMMV.

JP, there ya go- that expander stubbicatt suggests is like my setup- and maybe better. Your rifle may prefer softer slugs than you have now, and the expander will be even more valuable in trying to seat them. We gotta save the base of the bullet from damage.

It's worth trying but i won't be in the vicinity of the 200 yard range until late November. My local range is only 50 yards.

I bought a .324 expander from NOE after I had trouble seating cast bullets when using the die set expander.

Looks like we're using the same SAeco. What's the hardness of the ones you're using?

I recall that bases looked pretty good but I'll check them again. Thanks.

I stopped using the standard loading die and just use a .324 expander from NOE or reuse a fired case from that gun. I probably misspoke about the crimp. It's really just the die flattening the lip of the case to allow it to chamber.
