300-MP

II was able to get some 300-MP from Powder Valley that arrived yesterday.  Since the weather is going to get blustery this weekend, I decided to take the afternoon off work and get some range time in.  I have been shooting 4227 almost exclusively and have been getting some good results but not great.  I have shot quite a few 5 shot groups around 1" but my 10 shot ones would usually go about 2 inches or so.  After trying a few different powder charges I settled on this:

Win 1885 32-40 with 1-14 Green Mountain bbl
Hoch 'Darr" style 208.5 gr @ 20-1  - The mold CPA sells
12.7 gr 300-MP
Rem 9-1/2 primers
I didn't have my chrony with me but will check the velocity next trip.

My best target ever!  Shot 1 was the 25 at 1:30, shot 2 was the 24 next to it.  I ended up eventually holding at the edge of the 25 ring at 9:00 for the last 8 shots.

Joe,  You were right in saying that this HW is a shooter!

Jack, I've been working with 300MP in both my .32-20CPA & my .25-20WCF. Am making some good progress since having NOT used Rem 7 1/2 primers. Decent groups and chrono results (ES & SD) are appearing (using various CCIs & Fed 205-MARs) on my way to desired velocities. Would you care to share your primer thoughts? My goal is to find an acceptable substitute/replacement for 4100/Enforcer which seems to be going from an endangered species to extinct. It certainly looks like you are on a good track based upon the target you show. Nice work!

Thanks John.  I was your reviews or 300-MP that prompted me to try some.

Jack,

Very nice indeed. An excellent target.

JLouis got me started on 300MP with my 32-40 and it's my go-to powder for my 33-47.

You might want to try some Winchester or Federal Rifle Magnum primers.

I have tried various primers with the 4227 I was using and the Rem 9-1/2s gave the best SD and accuracy.  I will have to do some testing with the 300-MP and my Chrony.

bpjack..how does 300-MP compare to 4227 as far as leaving bore clean?  I have been trying to locate some for testing with cast in a .22 Hornet.

GeorgeC,

Sorry, but I really don't have any idea where you should start. The smallest case I've used 300MP in is my 32-40.

GeorgeC,

I would be guessing if I gave you an answer. Hopefully someone else will be able to help.

As far as bore fouling, I did notice that the 4227 seemed to have more fouling.  Nothing scientific but I had cleaned the barrel yesterday when I stopped using 4227 and noticed some resistance due to fouling at the muzzle in the longish Green Mountain barrel.  I did not notice same when cleaning after the 300-MP.

Powder Valley is out of 300-MP but they have Win 296 in stock. Some searches I did while looking for a starting load suggested they are the same powder.  They weigh the same as thrown from my measure and look identical under a 20x microscope.

I have had great success with 300MP in my 32-40, 28-35 and 25-21. Below is a 200yd. practice target I just shot at this mornings pre-match practice session with my 28-35.

Jerry H and myself are still at the range shooting and the Mirage is Wildy Wicked O.C. and it should be the same for the match tomorrow if we can continue to keep a handle on it.
