I've never measured the distance, but it's as far as the wires go.  Probably 12-15 feet I guess.

I have had wonky readings with black powder by setting it too close.  I think the wads and all of the solid crap that comes out causes trouble.

I think it was worth the purchase price as I've used it many times, although it might be nice to have an Oehler Smiley.
