Smokeless loads - weigh or measure (Read 2404 times)

	Fairly new to re-loading with smokeless, but have been re-loading with black for many years. With black I weigh each charge to +/- 1/10 of a grain. Do I have to be that fussy with nitro? I am doing some trials with some H4198 and Reloader 7 in my 40-70 Sharps Straight, starting with 22 grains - ref: Lymans Cast Bullet Handbook. I have a Lee Perfect measure and I can get 21.8 to 22.2 grains. I am shooting at 100 yards with nitro. Thoughts please. Chris

	If your already in the habit of weighing BP, I would continue that with smokeless. A good measure will get you +/- .1gr. If I loaded at home, I would weigh but, I use one case and throw my charges at the bench so, weighing isn't a option. Frank

Do I have to be that fussy with nitro? ...Yes, weigh nitro based powder (smokeless) carefully because it is more powerful than black powder to assure pressures are within published loading data. As for black powder, it being a weak powder, weighing to 1/10 of a grain is needless. Quote: I load for both myself and wife. She makes wads, lubes and weighs bullets. At the risk of sounding like a braggart, between us we have 40 National Records in Open, Military, Scope, Muzzleloader and Womens catagories for BP Target rifle. And 10 National Championships between Canada and the U.S. in likewise catagories. We don't shoot silhouette. To me, the bullet is the most important. Weight, design, appearance and alloy. Powder kept around 1/2 grain total variance = good enough. Being able to break a shot down the center, call it and read wind and mirage, priceless...... . Frank Monikowski
