Case Forming Loads (Read 4174 times)

	I need some suggestions for case forming loads. Rifle is an Alex Henry, made in 1869, so I'm sticking to BP pressures. Chamber is .450 Boxer Henry Long. Case that I'm going to fire form is a Jamison .450 3 1/4" BPE. I just want to iron out the slight shoulder. Looking for a light load to be topped with Cream of Wheat. Only a wad to seal the case mouth. No bullet. Is annealing necessary?

	I would just load and shoot - no need to form the cases, that little bit of shoulder will just form. And in case of doubt, just use black powder, that will keep you to black powder pressures.

	That's it load and shoot. 2nd time around the case will be formed. Case full of BP is by far the preferred method, compared to fast pistol powders and wads. Boats

	I have found that when you wish to form or fit a case to your chamber fully that a full case load of Black does it better than any other method I have tried. When firing new Brass that has the Cannuler rolled ring for Jacketed bullets I have fired shells three or four times and still been unhappy as the ring was still partially there. But one firing with a case full of Fg and a Breech seated bullet blows that ring almost completely out of existence, hard to even feel it there. A good case cleaning and you are in business. 	These cases are enormous! I filled a modern 45-70 case with FFg. It fills about 60 % of the case. Then I pushed a Wonder Wad onto the powder, followed by about 1/2" of floral foam and another wonder wad. I had a bunch of 414 grain cast bullets for the 45-70. Lubed them with SPG and seated them on the wads. No air space. The barrel is a 7-sided Henry, about .47 caliber. I figure there should be enough bang in a 45-70 case full of FFg to expand the case (and case mouth) and maybe expand the bullet to fill the barrel. Tomorrow is range day. I will report results.

	Cases expanded properly with 100 % success. Accuracy of a .45-70 bullet shot down a Henry barrel is not good. At 100 yards, most of the shots would hit a large fridge. Cases will now accept proper 550 grain .469 bullets.

	Have to ask. How much leading did you get from fire-forming with undersized bullets? Chuck
