The Ideal 375272, 38-55 bullet casts with 1:20 at 323gr.
I plan to shoot it breech seated in a 1:18 Uberti HiWall
Have looked in all my references for a 300gr or higher bullet smokeless charge with none listed ... any help appreciated

John, shooting a 310 grain NEI fixed I ended up with around 19 grains of H4198 or SR4759 but it didn't shoot as well as a lighter bullet so didn't pursue it.

18.0 - 19.0 of either 4759 or 4227, should get you good groups.

Back in the 80's, 18.5 gr of 4759 won some matches with that basic bullet weght. Use pistol primers with the 4759, Rem 2 1/2, prefered. 4227 doesn't care much, which primer you use.

Note that 4759 has been discontinued so unless you've got a large supply, might as well go with 4227.

Take this with a grain of salt and a dose of skepticism, but I've been eyeballing that Uberti myself. I noticed it has an 18 twist barrel. I've read elsewhere that 275 grain bullets are about as heavy as that twist will stabilize.

Disclaimer: I do not own one of these rifles, but plan to one day. And I sure don't have answers, but I'm only sharing what I discovered in my search for a proper bullet mould for when I DO own such a rifle.

I'd be ever so grateful if OP would share his results with us after he shoots that bullet.

Also, as I understand it, if the throat of the rifle hasn't been set up for breach seating, it might not work?

Gentlemen - thanks for the information & smokeless loading data...
I've been working the bullet with the Powley Calculator and with a SF - Stability Factor greater than 1.5, a bullet is at maximum stability.
From 1247 up to 1523 fps, Powley Cx says the 375292 is maximally stabilized and the minimum twist is 1:18.

Powley Minimum Twist Rate Calculation  **
SF      3.35
V      1247
BL      1.18
WT      323
DIA      0.381      TWIST =      18.0

I would be very comfortable with the results loading it with 42-46gr of FFg but with smokeless I'm clueless.

I had CPA ream the chamber for breech on the Uberti HiWall to have a companion bullet for the Douglas 32-40 barrel on the CPA.  The Hudson 375293 is an accurate breech bullet for the 32-40 - now I just have to get better groups out to 300yds with it.  J Louis ... I'm working on it! Wink

I've got both 4759 and 4227, so I'll try both powders.  When Hodgdon discontinued 4759 - I bought 6 lbs so I'm good for a goodly time

Note: Even with a 44 1/2, the 375292 cannot be breech loaded with a plugged case because the bullet is too long - 1.18".  That's why I'm looking for another breech seater vendor

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Ed. has 38-55 data for RCBS 378-312-BPS (312 grs) and Lyman 378674 (335 grs). Some loads:

RCBS:
IMR-4198   20-23.5grs 1183-1426 fps
RX7          21.5-25 grs 1258-1467 fps
IMR-3031   25.5-29 grs 1331-1532 fps

Lyman:
IMR-4198 22-24 grs  1320-1531 fps
RX7        24-26.5 grs 1470-1640 fps
IMR 3031 26.5-29 grs 1301-1621 fps

This should give a start. Their test barrel was a 30" 1-20 twist, .378" groove dia. - no remarks as to whether these two bullets are stabilized by the 1-20 rifling at these speeds.

Handy book to have.

John, isn't the Doc Hudson bullet a stepped design, specifically for breechseating? I have the same Ideal mold, and in my Schoyen Ballard the bullet enters the bore fairly easy for the first half of the bullet, and as it contacts the larger diameter of the bullet it get snug, and takes a bit more leverage.

jy ... thanks for the data.  The Lyman bullet charge is right in the range of the Powley fps calculation.  Appreciative

Vall here are the taper dimensions for the 375272:
321gr weight, 1:20 alloy
1.189 length
374 - 1st band  GG (118 wide x 347 deep)
374 - 2nd band GG (108 x 345)
373 - 3rd band GG (121 x 332)
384 - 4th band GG (178 x 332)
383 - base diameter
Note:  The original 375292's had a nominal weight of 310gr.  My mold was modified with a wider base base only - reason for the added weight.  Got the mold from Bill Lose and he said that Ideal did the modification
I tried loading it with the CPA plug (Gail is frowns at seaters) and the end of the plug case hung way past the front of the HiWall block.  Gail's reply ... Well, guess you'll have to buy a breach seater  Embarrassed

John Boy,
You keep using two different number, 375272 & 375292. I'm assuming that the 292 is a mis-keyed number?

First, the 375272 was made for a 18 twist barrel. It was the only twist used at that time for 38/55.

Next, unless I've messed it, I haven't seen your groove diameter stated. If the groove isn't OVER .380 the those base bands are going to VERY hard to get BSed. And if the bore diameter is larger than .373, you get mediocre accuracy.

Best thing to do, is size the bullet to .001 - .002 over groove and try it.

Those are ideal sizes. That said, I shot a original Pope mold, of the same design, in my 33 ELCO, it has a standard .330 bore. The first 3 bands were .328, .002 under, the forth band was .001 under groove and the base band .003 over groove.

I didn't expect much from it, because of the undersize front bands but, I got a 3.1" ten shot group @ 200 with it. Not near as good as my regualar bullet but, not as bad as I thought it would be.

My mistake John! I missed that it was the 375292, and thought it was the 375272 that you were having issues with. I take it your plugged case breechseater tool isn't adjustable to make it seat the bullet deeper?

This is confusing me even more John? Not sure what mold this is either? 375272 is a .38-55 mold, and never head of a 375293 mold for either .32-40 or .38-55??

What can I say when I screw up the the Ideal 34-40 mold with a 375293.  How about if I type it correctly as the 319273, the 185gr Hudson Bullet  Embarrassed
