Anyone Shooting A 28 In Competition.

Quite sometime back a member established a Traditional 28's group, none traditional 28 cartridges were not allowed to participate and it died as quick as it was born. The result being there is now a lack of information on this site for those shooting traditional or none traditional 28 caliber rifles. We now have five 28's that were recently built by our group of competitors, one traditional cartridge design and four non. If this group thinks it would be beneficial to all it would interesting to see the results from those currently using a 28 brought about by their individual load development sessions.

John,
yes, the "Traditonal 28's" was established about two years ago. The name was suggested by our own Jerry Hartwig.

The class was to encourage wildcating of the 28 caliber, just as the "Golden Age" shooters did and the only restriction is the cartridge case must be of the same head size and length, as a original BP case. Since the 38/50 Ballard is the same head size and length as the 30/30, any 28 caliber configuration can be used if the case is not shortened. The one exception to that is the 28/30, it can be shortened the the same lengths as Frank W. Mann did. You may even neck the 50/140 to 28 cal but, you can't shorten it! As examples, you can not neck down the 30 Herret. You can neck down the 30/30 or 40 Wesson - 32/30 Rem (357 Maximum). You can use any 28 caliber that you can verify, that was a BP loading or little know BP case. You can not use the 7mm TCU.

I'm most likely the "member" you speak of but, it was only my idea, all other interested forum members had input into it and all discussed the rules and agreed on them by vote.

In the discussion, I suggested that when the match results were sent to me by PM or Email, that they include all their loading data. Rifle, barrel & twist, powder & powder charge, primer, bullet weight, alloy & length, BS depth, wad if used, sights and any other info that they would like to add. That info would be given once and posted with the match results then updated when it changes.

If that info is sent to me, I will post it on the forum in Match Results each month. It will be similar to a Postal Match.

Questions are welcomed.

Frank

Too bad the rule was strictly BP cartridges. If it was opened up to only "hyphenated cartridges" it might get a lot more interest, and still keep out modern cartridges. A .32-20 necked down to .28 might make a very efficient round.

Val,
All is not lost. You can use the 25/20ss case. I had a reamer made for a 28/20ss after getting this started.  What got me started on a 28 is J. F. Rabbeth's work on it. He did a 28 on the 32 XL Wesson (the parent case to the 25/20ss) before he reduced the caliber to 25 because the 28 was to distructive to small game.

I'm attaching the equipment and loading sheet for anyone to use. I have the data for the first four shooters, that have reported scores, on file.

The only other rule to the Traditional 28's, is it has to be a traditional rifle action as is used in the ASSRA & ISSA "Traditional" class, like the Quarter Bore rules are, too.

This new topic if anyone has any interest was created to be free from any and all restrictions to cartridge case design, rifle design, actions used and or ones choice of powder. In my first post I noted there were 5 new 28's recently built in our group of competitors but I failed to mention an original 28-30 Ballard built by Barry Darr and a recently purchased 28-30 built around a Stevens action with an RKS barrel bringing the correct total to 7. All though it might not have any real meaning all the rifles in our group are of the traditional Schuetzen design but not all are built around traditional actions and it would be interesting to know what others are using.

This new topic does not have anything to do with the rules Frank is making note of nor is it an attempt to resurrect or to take anything away from the traditional 28 group that has already been established. It was created as a place for any and all to share what they are using for the benefit of all. There are no restrictions or format to follow simply post your data here for all to review, question and discuss openly.

For some unkown reason you might need to scroll left and right to review the text and pictures?

This is the 28-35 I just recently finshed building around a FBW Action and a Douglas 12 Twist basic blank and a Walnut blank gifted to me by a close friend. If future limited funds will allow I would like to cheker the forearm and butt stock before calling it a completed project. The butt stock is of Winchester Speacial Sporting design, the butt plate a Winchester large Swiss and the forearm of a Zischang design with ebony tip.  It also now sports a International Schuetzen lever of which feels more comfortable for my use. This rifle has also just recently became my full time benchrest competition rifle in the ASSRA and ISSA 200Yd Center Fire benchrest matches.
Below it are some of the 200 yard load development targets recently shot. The current load I have just found to be the most consistant is as follows. 12.0 Grains 300MP, CCI 200 Primers, Mos 147 Grain Spitzer Breach Seated No Wad and JJ250 Lube. The case is simply the 25-35 Winchester blown out to 28. The target middle left was shot using 11.2 grains 300MP and the middle right with 13.0 grains and the Darr 174 grain Truncated nose bore riding bullet. The remaining four were shot with the 12.0 grain load and the 147 grain Mos bullet.

Any and all questions are welcomed, I will do my best to address them and I am more than happy to be able  do so.

Frank,
I'm such a tightwad, I was thinking the .32-20 because the brass is one of the cheaper, and plentiful cases around. The .25-20SS is available, but tougher to find, and not cheap.

Vall Duane Jenner built a cast bullet breach seating benchrest 28 using the 25-20SS case on a Miller action the 28 Jenner. He was shooting it prior to my getting into competitive shooting some 15 years ago and has since moved to NM. I did see some of the targets he shot prior to his leaving that were quite impressive but I don't recall all of the specifics, year built, twist, bullet, powder etc. but I do know it was way ahead of its time.

Sounds like something Stevens should have built instead of building the longer/larger .28-30-120 Stevens. The shorter case opened up to .28 caliber would have saved them some trouble in the area of guns, chambering, and ammo, if they'd based them all on the same rim size, and case.
