45-70 smokeless load

Hello folks

I was wondering if anyone has some good 45-70 loads in the 1400fps ballpark that are stable and not position sensitive for a 500gr bullet.

I'm hoping to work up a smokeless load before the next match so I can give myself a break from all the wiping. The arm gets pretty tired by about 3 oclock

Firstly I breach seat

I have been working with H4198 at about 32gr which is a published load that should produce mid 1400's but the ES is HORRIBLE as in 100's and its really position sensitive. I've also tried 4 different primers from really mild to really hot.

Normally H4198 is a go to powder for this gun gives really good results with level 2 loads. But terrible level 1 loads.

Any suggestions....hopefully not the unobtanium powders Grin

Thank you very much for the advice fellas.

A majority vote for 5744 should get me off to a good start. Hopefully it gives the same result uncorked.

And the best part is I can get it

If you can find it SR4759 works really well and it is about the same burning rate as 5744 or 4227.

Start about 22 grains. If you use a strong rifle slowly increase the load until the unburned granules disappear then stop.
