You can cast excellent bullets and still drop the sprue back into the pot.  I think that as long as everything you are doing is done consistently then you'll have no problems.  I used to save my sprues and remelt them later, but switched to dropping them back into the pot immediately after cutting them.

I also like ladle pouring with  single cavity mold.  I used to bottom pour but I switched to the ladle as it worked much better for me.

I drop the sprue in as it cuts off too.  Why not?  It is in my hand when I twist to plate to cut it off, and it is still hot, it doesn't affect my bullet quality.

Leave your thermometer in the pot and watch the temp. drop when you put the sprews back in the pot. Extreme accuracy and or exceptional is simply the elimination of all the variables one has control over. Putting the sprews back in the pot after the casting session would be the elimination of just one of a multitude so what do you see as being the real advantage of putting each one back in the pot as each bullet is cast?

John I do leave the thermometer in all of the time ad watch it carefully.  My pots seem to hold their temperature most consistently when they are nearly full.  By dropping the still hot sprue back into the pot I keep the pot more full.  I used to keep the sprue cutoffs separate and melt them later, but I found I can still cast long runs of bullets with my Hoch mold with zero weight variance when putting them back into the pot immediately.  I'm not trying to say it's the best technique as I might change my mind ten years from now Smiley, but I don't believe it's hurting my bullet quality.

I have watched the pot temp in 4 perimeter locations and the center dropping sprues while I am casting with a Fluke temperature probe.  I couldn't find any variation in temps beyond the normal differential of the Lyman on/off cycle.  Consistent mold temp is the most important factor to low extreme spreads in bullet weight.
