Custom Made Dies.......

.....from drawings? Hi everybody! Has anyone ever had custom dies made from original drawings of the cartridge? The cartridge is considered extremely rare in collector circles, as is the rifle. The rifle is an 1874 Gras Cadet model and the cartridge was made from 11x59 Gras brass. Thanks for looking!

Any custom die maker will be very happy to make a die from a drawing (it's the easiest way for them) but, will your chamber match the drawing. Many of the old military chambers are large.

The best way is to send a fired case or a chamber casting to the die maker. That way, you will know that it will fit properly when you get it.

If you specify that this is the min. cartridge spec, not the chamber spec, so shouldn't really be an issue.  You could always take a peek at the CIP specs - there always is a chamber spec and a cartridge spec.  That could give you an idea as to clearances required.

Thanks for the input! I have been flogging the internet for days, looking for info on these Cadet rifles. About all I found was, 'yes, they exist', and two different cartridges, illustrated in books. I am adventurous, but this one may be more than I care to get in to.

I'd start with checking how the round compares with the standard Gras round - maybe it's possible to just a a gras die shortened in order to have a sizing die.  or any other die for that matter.

I have received specs for 3 different cartridges! I may have to go ahead, buy the gun and do a chamber casting. Thank you all for your input!
