Suggestions for a 25-20 shooter (Read 3568 times)

	I have a question that I wonder if someone can help me with. I have a 44 Stevens that I sent to a very good gunsmith out in the NW to be relined. It was relined with a TJ 1 in 10 liner and while there the lever and action was tightened up. Now my question is, since this gun is not the strongest, is it safe to shoot in this configuration? I'm thinking that I'm going to have to shoot a pretty heavy bullet to stabilize, and consequently that's going to take a pretty healthy amount of powder. And now I'm beginning to question whether I should be doing this or not. I'm hoping to get some load suggestions too if anyone has any. Thanks, Jack

	Jack, Because you have a 10 twist, doesn't mean that you must shoot a 120 gr bullet. Our 25 cal guru (JerryH) shots a 120 gr bullet at 1600+ fps. You don't have to shoot it that fast either. I wouldn't worry about the twist, just start with a 80 - 90 gr bullet. If you have a chronograph, try to find a load that clocks about 1300 +/- 100 fps. Use powders with burn rate between Unique and AA#9. You'll have lots of testing to do but, that is part of the fun Don't worry about the strength of the action as long as you start with the above loading data. When the load exceeds the strength, it won't blow up, the cases will stretch, when that happens, back off the load. You could also try the 1000 fps range with the 120 gr bullet but, watch for stretching and tipping. Frank

	If anything, your 10-inch twist should overcome the "tippiness" of the standard 87-gr lead bullets in the normal 14 or 15-inch twists at normal .25-20 velocities, or any reduced loadings you might prefer in your 44. You might have trouble with 60-gr bullets overstabilizing, but I would expect the normal bullet weights to shoot as well or better.

	If you have a choice between overstabilization and understabilization, Overstabilization is by far the lesser of the 2 evils - if any. Just give it a try...

	Agree with everyone else. The 1:10 twist will work just fine, and pushing it to 1000-1200 fps with a lighter bullet should not create any issues with accuracy or the 44's strength.

	Thanks guys, you've given me confidence in the old Stevens. I'll have to get it back out and work with it some. While I was waiting for the reline job I bought a CPA and when the Stevens came back I put it in the safe and never really had much time for it. After Sept 15 my gun club duties slack up and I'll get on it. Thanks for your replies. Jack
