30-30 cases formed to 32-40 sticking in chamber ?

Has anyone had this issue with fire formed 30-30 cases formed to 32-40 being a little difficult to extract from the chamber after being fired ? I have been using Winchester 30-30 cases formed for 32-40 in my CPA rifle . I first run them through a RCBS Cowboy sizing dies several times with some Redding Imperial sizing die wax and then fire form . The shell is a little difficult for the extracter to remove them, not impossible but a little tight . I can take a resized 30-30 case to 32-40 and you can remove it very easily but once fired very hard to extract ? Increased pressures from the 30-30 case ? Now my Winchester 32-40 cases of which I have fired 4-5 times each and have never resized a single case extract very easily . My problems started when I upped my charge of IMR 4227 from 14.0 grs. to the current 14.2 grs. but only with the 30-30 cases ? Thanks

That's odd- if they went in and out before. Your load isn't high pressure in my estimation.
I do mine in one pass when I form, lots of lube inside the neck and just enough on the outside. I use Hornady's Unique wax. Get few dents and don't bother fireforming usually. Just shoot 'em. Maybe your have hardened the things. Dunno. Try loading them up again and see if they fit better after another go. Like yer .32-40 cases do.
Once extracted, have you tried reinserting one? Maybe something else is making it hard to get out.

Hi,

This is probably not the cause of your problem, but it's an easy test.

Try indexing your cases so that they go into the chamber exactly the same way they were fire formed.

The next thing is to measure the diameter of the .30-30 case at the web and compare that measurement to the diameter of a factory .32-40 case at the same place.  Oddly enough, if the web diameter of the .30-30 case is less than the web diameter of the .32-40 case, the .30-30 case will swell upon firing  directly in front of the web.

Not at all familar with a 42-30?
But in regards to the 30-30 being re-formed to 32-40 they are already about 20 thous. short and you might loose another 10-20 thous. in length after being fire formed. That would put your throat / leade area in the throat erosion area depending on a few factors like length of freebore leade angle etc. That being the most critical area leading into the bore would you not be better served to start out with a 38-55 case before that area gets washed out / eroded?

-- As J L said, even  Starline 38-55 LONG 2.125" cases
may be best to be sure of enough length. But, you are likely to want to anneal them before running them down to 32-40W/B
Also; I suggest you start with a
chamber cast to check chamber length, freebore, if any and leade, not to mention base diameter.

For comparison: I have a couple of boxes of  NIB WRA Co. 32-40 brass from "way back" . Length is right on old specs of 2.125",
base dia is at 0.413".
COW lists SAAMI Max dimensions of  30-30 brass base dia at 0.4215" and max length at 2.039.
COW shows 32-40 Win/Ballard at 0.424" max and 2.13" length.
