#2 Remington rolling block in 32-20

I have a soft spot for rolling blocks. I already have a #2 in 32 extra long rimfire that I shoot a fair bit. But I've been really wanting one in 32-20. I finally came across one and brought it home. After cleaning and de-leading the bore I would rate it at very good+ to near excellent. The only slight downside is that it has a Marbles R3 tang sight rather than the correct R2. The R3 is actually for the #4 rolling block. But I think this will work for now.

Nice find!
Let us know how she shoots.

I have the same gun! Finding the correct tang sight, with slight curvature to the base for a #2 will be tough! I have a midrange vernier on mine, and carefully bent the base to match the curve of the top tang. My little #2 in .32-20 will hit the 400 yd. dinger with enough sight elevation, and hope to get to 650 yds. if I can do my part!

The Lyman RA (and the Marbles R2) is shown to fit the Remington #2, #5 and the #3 Hepburn (in 22 cal).

According to the Marcot Lewis et al book, the Remington #2 was introduced in late 1872 as the Remington Gem Rifle, and then a few months later early in 1873, Remington renamed the Gem Rifle to the Remington No. 2 Sporting Rifle

William Lyman patented his No. 1 tang sight early in 1879.

Production of the Remington #3 Hepburn is believed to have started in 1880.
You’ll have to ask Tom Rowe when the Hepburn was first made available in 22 calibre.

The earliest Remington catalog I have on hand that shows the Lyman No. 1 tang sight available as an option is 1899. The #2, #5 and the #3 Hepburn rifles are all listed in this catalog.

Webster Marbles introduced his Automatic Flexible Joint Rear Sight in 1903.

William Lyman patented his improved No. 1A tang sight with the side lock in mid-1905.

For a time, you could purchase new firearms (Remington, Winchester, Stevens, Savage etc) through Lyman, and Lyman would install their sights and adjust them before shipping the firearm to you. You could also ship a previously purchased rifle to Lyman to have the sight installation performed by them.

Since the #3 and #5 rifles have straight upper tangs, I doubt that you would have received a Lyman No. 1 code RA sight with a curved base as a stand alone sight purchase from Lyman or Marbles, except by special request and at additional cost.

Whether or not Remington or Lyman themselves arched the RA base during installation on a #2 prior to shipping the rifle to the customer is left for you to mull over.

Great info BP - thanks.

Since posting this I've had new sight screws made with the proper threads and heads to match the sight base. I also carefully arched the base to match the tang contour pretty closely. Lastly I added a 1" diameter eye piece for better work at the range.

Nice work! Looks like the correct sight now with the bend added to it! I need to do the same to mine one of these days!

Marlinguy - you have a lot more elevation than I. What sight and base did you use? Did it come with the correct hole spacing?

That's an old "Pony Express" tang sight. One of the very earliest reproduction tang sights, made in the 1970's. I thought it was Remington spacing when I purchased it, but turned out to just be close, and no go. About .020" off, so a friend opened it on his mill and made one hole slotted to make it work.
I shoot it at fairly long ranges, and ran out of adjustment on my old sight before I got to 400 yds., and didn't even try the 650 yd. with it. Hope to be able to take it to 650 easily with this sight.

MVA also makes a sight adapter for the #2 Remington that matches the radius contour of the upper tang and is flat on the top allowing any tang sight with the proper hole spacing to be used on the #2 without modification. I have 2 on my personal rifles and can highly recommend them.
