Fixed cartridge won't chamber in CPA

I was forming some 32-40 brass from 30-30 cases today with a new set of RCBS Cowboy dies . In order to get a complete fire form I wanted to load some fixed ammo . The pressure from a seated bullet will create a better fire formed 32-40 .Not only will the 30-30 cases not chamber nor will the 32-40 cases chamber . Are these CPA chambers cut that small for breech seating only . My bullets are @ .322 " Full length resized, just enough case flare to start the bullet. There appears to be no bulge in the case from the bullet . I took a flared case only without seating the bullet and the flared empty case would not chamber ? Winchester brass also . Thanks

I second OkeyMaples suggestion.  Have you made a chamber cast?

I use reformed 30-30 in my 32-40 CPA with no problem.  I haven't tried to use fixed ammo yet.  I would guess the bullet would push back into the case if the bullet was a bit big.

BTW I have shot double ought shot which I think is 0.33" dia or thereabouts for gallery loads, weird results.   I was considering shooting these for fire-forming.

Let us know what you find out.

Were you using a quick powder like Bullseye?

Will the cases chamber after running them through the die, all the way untill the the shell holder touches the die, w/o flaring them?

I would first try a non flared case and if it does not fit I would paint the case with a magic marker to note just where on the case the tight spot is the neck area or the web.

Bruford, in my .32-40 the chamber is pretty tight.  I don't think I could use fixed ammunition unless the bullet was a bit undersized.  When Russ Weber made my seater he reamed the case mouth on the inside in order to fit the bullet.

Brudford - before you take J Louis's advice:
* Take your FL sizing die and insure the bottom of the die sits directly on the top of the shell plate with the press arm fully extended
* Then turn the die down an additional 1/4 of a turn
* Run several cases through the die
This will provide for full travel of the FL sizing die over the case web
Then do as J Louis suggested

As John Boy suggests, the first sizing when I form from .32spl or .30-30 usually needs to be as far down as I can get with the die. My chamber isn't real snug, being factory Winchester, so any tighter chambering is going to make that especially neccesary. My take on it is that for the entire length of the case you need to rearrange the taper that was less on the shouldered versions. Any remaining original would show as a fat spot on the case not easily seen, but there none the less. And, like I say, my chamber isn't very snug at all. Don't forget the neck if yours is tight- Like J. Louis says, try the marker on the case, too.

Just for grins... What does a fired case neck measure? If it's much less than, say, your .322 bullet and about .018 you may have a minimum neck. Or thick brass. Not sure if that is always a good thing in a cast bullet rifle. Mine will still chamber a round using .323 bullets at the total size of .341 or .342. That's just a little fatter than the SAAMI measurement max. But it works in my chamber.

If you find out your problem is in the wed area it is not unusual to have to grind off the top of the shell holder so the case can get further into the sizing die approx. another 20-50 thousands of which often times is just enough. This is a better approach than taking it off the bottom of die of which can open another can of worms.

Quick way to see if the problem is in the web area, put a washer on top of the shell holder push the case all the way in your die. Knock it out with a steel rod and mallet.

Problem is likely the die or cases. Sizing dies size the case walls well, they won't reduce size of the solid case head at the base much. Spot it sticks indicated by a marker painted case is the clue.

Some headstamp .30 US cases size down to .25 Kraig for my CPA fine other brands need to be turned in a lathe just a bit at the web to chamber. Sizing die won't do the job.

My 32/40 CPA barrel chambered for Breech chambers fixed fine. However my cases were formed from WW 38/55. Another brand case or one from 30/30 may or may not. Lot of variation one head stamp to another.

Full length sizing die works fine . Brass will chamber . It is when you ever so slightly bell the case mouth just enough to seat a bullet that the case with or without a bullet will not chamber . That includes 32-40 Winchester cases as well . Breech seating with a case is fine . The only reason I'am even trying fixed cartridges is to get a better seal with the brass, a seated bullet will do that . After the case mouth is belled it measures .340 " which Paul Shuttleworth tells me is the diameter of his 32-40 CPA chambers . He recommends the Lyman M die for belling the case mouths ?

First run the M die in the case mouth w/o touching the taper. See if it will chamber. If it does, turn the expander down 1/8 turn, at a time, after touching the taper and try it each time. Back off when it won't fit.

Also, chamfer the case mouth as much as possible, with a 82 deg counter sink.

If the .340 size is what the chamber is, your .322 bullet and brass ought to total that number- based on my brass from W-W and Western. So, if the flare is still added on you are just a tiny bit beyond that sum. I don't flare mine, just size minimally and use an 8mm expander ball. This to uniform the inside dimension for equal tension (I hope). Plus, I chamfer like Frank advises. My chamber, is of course, a little different than yours, but I think if you carefully seat the slugs in the chamfered case, like I do you may be able to get it done without the flare. Good luck, because my rifle has been shooting very nicely with fixed lately.
