Hornady Brass for Case Forming

I found some Hornady .303 brass and am curious as to how it would work for forming .40-50 SS.

I don't know about your specific application, but I reformed 50 Hornady .405 cases into .35 Winchester cases and didn't lose a one.  I annealed the necks afterwards more because I felt guilty for not doing so before the reforming than for any real reason.  They've held up for at least 5 loadings since without a single loss.  Really excellent brass.

If you use Imperial Sizing Wax, you shouldn't have any trouble sizing them down.  If you are blowing them out, you might anneal the necks and shoulders, just to be certain.

What size do you need for a good fit in the back end of the chamber?

Have you measured the head of the Hornady .303 brass?


I have gone the other way. Most .303 brass is too small in the head for the large .303 chambers. I used Hornady .405 brass to make .303 Brass and it works better than anything else I have used. The .405 Hornady brass is a .458 dia at the head and most .303 chambers are .460 to .462.
