Barrel leading help needed

I but on a new Shilen 32 cal. barrel (chambered in 32 RKS) and after a few rounds when I run a wet (Hoppies) patch there are streaks of lead on the patch , the lead pcs. are fine wire like looking . There does not look to be any gray streaks in the bore as can be found with lube failure.
The rifle shoots fair groups which seem to shrink after 20 rounds or so but it would seem like it would do better if there was not the lead in the bore.  I have fired as many as 75 rounds with out cleaning and there seems to be the same amount of lead in the bore as when only 10 shots are fired.
Does any one have a suggestion as to the cause and the cure for this leading.

Thanks for any ideas

I also have a Shilen 32 cal in 32-40. Since day one I have also gotten those fine lead wires. I have about 1000 rounds thru the barrel and other than the "wires" there isn't any sign of leading. With the barrel scrubbed with a bronze brush and solvent (super clean) the first couple of shots usually are off of the target but things settle down in about 5 shots. I do not clean between shot strings and I can still get good groups at 200 yds. after 80 or more shots. I worried about the wires for the first couple hundred shots and just lived with the fact that is what the barrel does. I shoot a CPA, 1:20 and use NRA's ALOX lube. At Castbullet bench matches I can keep up with the Gas Check guys that shoot 308's in the 2000 fps range.

Dales what lube are using and how far down the bullet does the bullet engrave?
Also try poping a primer with a seated bullet ( no powder ) count off about 15 seconds, open the breach and the case should pop out from the gas pressure. Do not stand behind it catch in a pile of rags. If the case does not pop out the bullet does not have good gas seal and gas cutting of the bullet will occure with leading being the end result. Knock the bullet back out with your cleaning rod and look to see if you have any black soot running down the side / sides of the bullet.

Oldman try doing the same!

If you fellows are not getting a good gas seal seat the bullet in deeper and give it another try. My rifles shoot best with the bullet engraved all the way through the baseband so don't let become a concern if you need to go deeper.

I have fired a case with out powder and bullet seems to seal the bore. I have used the same lube (Bees wax, Crisco, bag balm and canola oil with other barrels and worked fine but I tried some alox schuetzen lube jut to make sure it was not the lube.
Maybe lapping the bore would help?

Leading can be the result of:

2. bullet not breech seated far enough to seal the base band from gas cutting around the edge of the base band (use Weber method of inserting a bullet backwards to measure minimum seating depth - i.e. length of bullet plus length from end of barrel into bullet nose equals total length bullet needs to be breech seated)

.

Dave, Maybe I too dense, but I'm not following that. Could you explain a little more detail?

He may be referring to the base of the bullet protruding such that lead is being melted before it is pushed all the way into the bore.
The only time I have had leading in my .3201 Shilen 32-20 was while firing off a bunch of 32-20s to empty the factory-loaded cartridges....dumass....I use Emmert and run a dry patch through every other relay.

I would lead the barrel with some fine lapping compound (400 or 600 grit) I have found that Shilen barrels require some leading to make them shoot well. After leading run a patch with some lanolin on it before you shoot. When you clean make your last patch a lanolin patch. Do that for at least 20 times. I’ll bet that solves your problem.

I use a weber breach seater and seat the bullet so the rifling cuts half way thru the base band. The base band is .323 and the barrel is marked .3195. I suspect that there is a small bur from the rifling being cut that shaves the small wires I get. Now mind you that these wires are so thin that I can only see them with a real bright light and catch the reflections. Think of a single strand of dental floss. The rifle will hold its own at the range. Personally I do not like to put abrasives in the barrel. I suspect the bur will slowly be worn down with shooting. Just my 2 cents worth........

Thanks Dave. I've got to get my 25 going with the Webber seater.   I have always used a simple push rod in my Pope.  The base band is the same size as the OD of the case.
