Saeco #732 mold for 32-40

Has any one tried the Saeco #732 single cavity mold in 32-40 .322" with their CPA rifle ? I'am getting no consistent bullets with the Hoch mold . My Lyman molds cast better bullets . I think Redding now owns Saeco ? Thanks

I can't answer you question about the Saeco mold but what sort of problems are plaguing the Hoch mold?  I ask because I've had a few problems as well but I think those are behind me.  I now cast quite hot, typically around 800F and I preheat the mold on a hot plate to 350 F.

I found any lube on pins or the Sprue to be a disaster.  I've also stopped fluxing with wax.  I now keep most of the pot covered with charcoal ( not briquettes!) and flux with Marvelflux.  Temp control by PID.

When all goes well I can get +/- 0.2 gr on a 207 gr bullet but I end up with a lot of sighters as well.

Dave , I do lube my spruce plate and not the pins . I'am using Frankford Arsenal drop out mold release and their clean cast lead fluxing compound . I also cast vey hot and heat my mold with a MAP gas torch . I cannot get this mold to throw a .322" bullet with pure 20:1 alloy mix .

So the problem is the diameter or quality?  There have been reports of some Hoch molds throwing the wrong sized bullets.  If you bought it from CPA I would speak with them about this problem.

Brudford - your just having a hell of problem casting properly.  Might want to invest in some reading material
A must casting with any mold is - lube the pins! Otherwise, when you close the mold halves, the pins don't fully seat leading to oversize bullets and bullets out of round.  I don't know of any mold maker that says - don't cast the pins
Heat mold to 800 degrees? Your casting too hot.
Read this and your casting bullets should improve immensely ...
The 8-Phase Casting Cycle ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
And buy this book too ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
BTW, I cast with 3 different Hoch molds - no issues with any of them

Brudford, I shoot the Saeco 723 fixed cartridge, but if you have given up on your unidentified model Hoch mold and go to the Saeco for breech seating, here's some information for you:
* 205gr with 1:20
* 0.322 base
* 1.044 length
* 0.1615" seating depth to engrave the base with your plugged case.  Again if the extended plug end is 1/16" you will have to extend the plug 0.099" by shimming the back of it in the case with 'something' or make a new plug or buy an adjustable breech seater

I use the Saeco 200gr bullet in my CPA and it works better than the Hoch bullet for me. I shoot it lubed with spg and use black powder.  I haven't found the combo to be super accurate, but better than the Hoch bullet in that chamber.  It's probably just me though.

I will say this about the Hoch mold.  When I first started using it I had a heck of a time getting good bullets out of it.  This was because I was used to casting big 530+ grain bullets in molds with really big blocks.  Once I figured out how to cast with the Hoch mold I found that it's probably the most consistent mold I own.

My Hoch 205 runs 210 gr with 25:1.  I had issues with it at first, running it too hot with frosting and fill issues.  Getting a PID fixed that; I cast at 700 to 725, depending on ambient air temps ( I cast outside), running the mold as fast as the sprue solidifies and frosts over.  Every once in a bit I have to let it cool for a few seconds by waving it in the air.  It's a big mold and tends to retain heat.  If your bullets are frosting drop your temps and decrease casting rate.  A few degrees one way or another makes a big difference.
  Oh, the Frankford Arsenal mold release is crap.  It will give you undersized, poor bullets.  Scrub that mold out with brake cleaner and a NEW toothbrush before you cast.  A properly seasoned mold is like a seasoned cast iron pan.

FWIW, I also found trouble with the F.A. Mould release agent. I now "season lightly" a clean mould with a little smoking with a BIC lighter.

I agree with OkeyMaple. Just smoke with a bic or matches. But I do use the release agent on my ladle. Dale.

In a couple of threads, there have been many words that Hoch bullets do not cast!
I disagree.
Below are pictures of several nose (all Hoch's) & base cast  32-40 bullets in either 1:20 or 1:30 that are absolutely concentric, filled out to nominal maker's mold specifications and have perfect sharp bases. None of these bullets were cast at higher than 740 degrees, no mold prep solutions or smoke used and all mold pins were lubricated with paraffin wax that does not leave any residue. And the Bell Curve weights for all these bullets were plus or minus 0.5 grains!
Left to right:
* Saeco 723
* Ideal 319273
* Hoch 322-200
* Hoch  322-205
* Hoch 322-215

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Now, let's discuss comparative group accuracy for these bullets:
* Saeco 723 - Unknown
* Ideal 319273 - Proven: Doc Hudson's record scores bullet
* Hoch 322-200 - Proven: J Louis's superlative  200yd target
* Hoch  322-205 - Unknown
* Hoch 322-215 - Unknown

One should never need to use a release agent in a mould, poor bullets will be the end result. I fear that is what your problem is and it will take the casting of quite a few bullets to burn it out of there before you get quality.
In the past I have had to re-adjust the sprue plate on a new Hoch mould. Push upwards on the bottom sprue plate while holding the mould up to bright light. You should see a fine line of light under the top plate and it needs to be exactly the same amount by eye going accross the top of the mould blocks and the sprue plate should just move freely no tighter and no looser.
Properly adjusted minus any release agents they are extremely enjoyable to cast with and will provide consistent match quality bullets.

I might add a Pea size piece of pure bees wax is what I have found the best to flux with. I tried the Marvelflux and found it to contaminate my alloy but if it works for you by all means continue to use.

Came across some rodeo rosin chunks. A small amount seems to work better than anything I have tried. Smokes quite a bit.
