Which style of wind flags/vanes, more responsive/sensitive?
Tail or no tail, if so what material for a tale?
Prop or No prop/Daisey wheel?

Any opinions???  Smiley

Balanced vanes, full-flying tail, and a strip of surveyor's tape.     Cheesy

I have tried them all. The style I ended up using now for the last 5 years is Rick Graham Flags.
Single vain without daisys. Surveyors tape works for tails. If its 20 mph plus winds then i change my tails to sail cloth. Feel free to pm me if you need more info

I started with were Sinclair The first thing I got rid of was the annoying props. I replaced them with a pointer to counterbalance the flag. I replaced the vanes with a slightly larger piece of chloroplast. I use a 30” piece of 1” engineer tape as a tail.
The two most important things are that the flags be balanced and set square.

I prefer the dual vane to see the angle of the wind easier.  I started with a propeller and got used to it so that is what I prefer.  Surveyor's tape works great for a tail.  Tom

The first picture shows what I now use. The second picture shows four flags agreeing on the wind, an uncommon occurrence here at home, or Modesto.

I have gone from no flags (just started Schuetzen in 2006), to a couple of wind socks, to dual vane wind indicators, to what I use now.

The dual vane indicators were easier to read for me, but were a PITA to pack and transport.

Once I got used to the single vane indicators I really don't think I've given up anything.

Props, Snoopy Tails, dual vs. single vanes...........it's all what you can read and what makes the most sense to you.

They all need to add up for me (look the same, or know how to hold off), then the mirage needs to be right. Mirage is my final "go" to break the shot.

I Prefer the simple old fashioned style as shown in JerryH Pics. They were common about 20 years ago when I shot competitions. I love them and watch daily for weather and wind confirmations for enjoyment as well as casual shooting. I tried without daisy wheels and they were MUCH slower without. Now a pain to get the once plentiful daisies in Canada (any sources ? ) I know everyone is trying to re-invent the wheel, but I cant imagine anything better to show you everything you want to know, with quickest truest , and steadiest response

I use the single vane with sail tail.
I went to the local sign shop and had them laminate flouresent orange on one side and green on the other on a piece of 2ftX2ft cloroplast and I got six vanes out of that one piece. Cost 20.00 dollars and the tips are the drops off the cut vanes. The colors are brighter than the pictures depict. The counter balance is 1018 cold rolled. Sail tails from Fly Fishing Fundementals, pivots home brewed and some day I need to try the Daisy wheels.

There are these: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
I would paint them, but, maybe some of us like pastels. Grin

WOW! $18 "economy shipping" makes them $8.60 ea. Probably way more to Canada, "eh".

I like the props/daisy wheels. Also the Snoopy Tails. All of them added together (4 flags + 1 target indicator, and an indicator on my bench, plus the wind on my back, not to mention the mirage, and sometimes something that just doesn't feel right) = total confusion for me. Unless I'm on top of my game. Then everything comes together, and I shoot well.

Try them all. Decide what works/makes sense to you.

These are my flags. I made two of the large one and the small is made from the tail cut of one of the large pieces of corregated plastic.

The aluminum is a small piece of 3" angle, machined so the tail is in the center of the rod that the prop. is on.

I like the large propeller. I watch the painted blade and try to shoot at the same speed, each time. I don't have to gage the wind speed, just watch the RPM.

Regarding the twin tail, it just gives more surface area to make the flag more reactive to wind change. You can also do that by using a larger tail.
