Herters used to sell a wasp waist style jacketed bullet back in the sixties. Shaped much like a Coke bottle. The bullets made a loud "pop" when impacting a target.

Long ago I talked to Mike Petrov about the coke bottle design, he told me that his son had given him some wasp-waisted bullets that shot very well.

Old friend, Bob Pitts tried Herters wasp waist bullets in his 243 Sako rifle. Had problems with excessive pressure. Blown primers.

Joe, I'm not sure how we could possibly adapt the "Coke Bottle," to our lead-tin alloy greased bullets, and the design would require a lot of trial and error, but it would be interesting and we might be able to improve our velocities and performance without more powder. It's just a thought...... Tongue

Thinking would have to be cast hard so the middle doesn't slump. Paper patched?  Might could push them fast.

Dan Theodore designed a wasp wasted (grooveless) bullet that used his special dip lube and looked paper patched when done. From what I read it did lead the barrel.

Whitcomb's coke bottle waist doesn't benefit bullets. The purpose is to keep an approximately constant cross-sectional area throughout most of the airframe's length. Aircraft have wings, and the waist compensates for the cross-sectional area of the wing. Delta wings need small waists with the thinnest region aft. (Convair B-58, F-102 and F-106.) Thin swept wings don't need a waist (Tupolev Tu-22). Bullets don't have wings, so no waist is required.

Herters' coke bottle reduced the contact area between the bullet and the bore which, in theory, gives a slightly higher muzzle velocity.

And Bernie Rowles at Old West Molds makes the monogroove NASA II BPCR inspired by the coke-bottle design.

Bob, bullets don't have wings. The Coke bottle shape/effect, doesn't apply to bullets because they don't have wings. So, come up with a bullet with wings, then we can talk about it.

well just look at all the waisted bullet users on the podiums all over the world.
that is probably why we can shoot so much better than the old dead guys. they did not have waisted bullets.
keep safe,
bruce.
