25 Hornet brass prep

I'm now in the process of prepping brass for my newly acquired Hoch 25 Hornet rifle...I have no idea what reamer was used for chambering...I have found the base diameter of prepped 22 Hornet brass (.295) exceeds the chamber diameter...I have used my lathe to file the brass base where loading is smooth and normal (diameter .293)...I received a breech seater with the rifle...base diameter measures .290...removing material from  brass is not a good idea...can anyone direct me to a sizing die or ???...Thanks John

have you done a cast of the chamber? I am surprised it would be that tight.

I plan to do a casting...to date I have filed the base of virgin 22 Hornet (before necking'up to .257) brass until brass would chamber and extract smoothly...the trimmed base measurement was .293...I plan to call CH4D to ask the spec's on their sizing die...again I don't know what reamer the smith used when chambering...my hope now is a sizer from CH4D will fix this issue...Thanks for the quick reply's...John

Let us know what you find out with the casting, I don't believe a SAAMI Spec. die will resize the base down to meet your current requirements but I could be wrong. John were you suggesting that CH could make what the gentleman needs and if so I apolgize for butting in.

Top or bottom, cutting off the top would not affect the base diameter unless I am missing something?

Good idea, that way it won't get necked back down to 22 cal. A fairly simple fix.

The 25 Hornet reamer I have, a friends measures right at .300 at the base the best that I can measure, I don't have the print and I beleave factory or SAAMI spec. is .298? My Rem. 22 Hornet brass is .294.

For what it's worth - a spot check of some new, never fired .22 Hornet WW-Super headstamped brass on my desk here shows base diameter at .2925".

checking the CH4D website I see two (2) 25 Hornet sizing dies listed...one may have the base spec I need...I will call them in the am to see...when chambering virgin 22 Hornet brass the brass will "hard" stick 3/16 before fully chambered...Thanks for the reply's

Understand the need to not neck size, easily drilled out but how would a SAAMI die reduce the base dia. by simply cutting of the neck sizing portion? Not trying to be argumentive but I am missing something?

Mike that brass to see if it's also .293".

If it is, you must have a rifle chambered by the same Parkenfarker who did my Krag Lovell and left the chamber base end .002" smaller than the brass that's supposed to fit it.  My theory is that he used a reamer meant to make a sizing die.

My initial thought was why not just run a 22 Hornet finish reamer in your chamber - problem solved?

(of course, it would best be done on a lathe to keep things straight and protect the front of the chamber/throat)
