It looks like a standard take down schuetzen until you see its a 30/40.

Joel, that is a beautiful high wall. I've seen that rifle somewhere but can't quite recall. Dale.

Wow! That one makes my plain Jane, flat-spring 30-40 'wall look like, well... a plain Jane! You really need to get a letter for that one.

I got it in a trade from Jim Goergen many years ago. It may have been pictured in one of his sale catalogs. I have always been more of a fan of the High Wall "Special Single Shot" and "Special Sporting" rifles than the schuetzens, but I couldn't resist  one in this caliber.

My favorite is the Winchester Helm Pattern Schuetzen. My special sporting 32-40
is okay for offhand. Not near as good as the helm for fit.

Nice rifle by the way! I want it bad!

Gorgeous rifle, and I love that style of High Wall, regardless of caliber! The .30-40 just makes it more interesting!

Joel,
Your rifle is also displayed earlier in this forum.
Perhaps that's where it was seen before.
It's beautiful!
Does it have a curved lower tang?

Looks like a LeRoy Merz photo.  On second thought, it is kinda bizzaro with that weird shaped stock and lever. 30-40 isn't one of your classic Schuetzen calibers.

Send it to me, I'll take care of it. Might even shoot it in a match. I have some brass and a Pope mold. I don't mind the inconvenience.

I can't read it, Bob, dang! Never seen that ad before. Do you have a better image? More resolution? The rifle, the bizzaro rifle looks like a Otto Bremer to me.

The stock looks a bit like this one. Especially the grip cap.

That's a very period design on your grip cap Frank! I've seen it numerous times on old single shot rifles, plus some lever actions. My 1881 Marlin Flues rifle has the same pattern horn cap.

Is that a take-down-1/4 turn block that the barrel is installed in ?

westerner - I am quite sure that the page shown was taken from a web sight, California digital newspaper collection, an incredible wealth of information. Quite some years ago, more than I care to divulge, I came across a ribbon announcing the formation of the San Jose rifle club in 1899. My grand mother and father came to this country from Germany in 1917, and as a youngster would go to the local Germania hall with her. On the wall were several, I know now, German Schuetzen rifles. Their image stuck with me until I came across the ribbon. In my last high school years my interest flourished and I did what research I could in the San Jose library and found precious little information. Many years later I decided to look further and eventually stumbled on the above website. It was like someone turned the lights on. There were something like 800 plus entries for San Jose rifle club. As I discovered in reading one of their ranges was a scant few blocks from where I grew up, and my brother now lives.
Please excuse the rant, but glad to pass the website on to you and others interested.  Best regards
