Which MVA Scope for a 22rf
Jun 25th, 2015 at 11:25pm
Print Post
I'm looking at buying an MVA scope for my 22rf on a CPA action.  I'm thinking that their Winchester B series in 5x will work just fine.  The other option is one of the 2000 series in 6x.  I doubt that I'd notice much difference between 5x and 6x but I will for sure notice the difference in price, about 300 bucks.  Does anyone have any thoughts pro or con?  I'm going with MVA because I've learned (several times Embarrassed) to buy the best first.

Thanks,
JS

I've got a couple of the 23" scopes and one of the B5's.  I'd pick the B5 for the .22.   It's a bit easier to adjust, and I think it looks good on the CPA rifles.

While I use a 28" MVA scope on all my single-shot rifles, you might also want to check out the DZ Arms scope. About the same price, but you will notice the difference between 5X, 6X and the DZ 8X power. They are a similar quality to the MVA scopes. You cannot go wrong with either.

That's  good point and they'll work with the Posa blocks that you probably already have.

If you are using the scope purely for your .22 shooting, the Winchester B replica should work fine.  But if the .22 barrel is an understudy for a longer range centerfire rifle, I don't know if the small scope would be competitive with the longer ones if you switch over.  If you get a bigger scope for centerfire barrels, the settings and adjustments will be different.

I'm planning to mount my 28" MVA on my Hepburn .22 and use it for offhand practice so the sight picture and the wobble will be similar to that with my larger calibers.  It will be pure overkill, but it will be the same setup for everything, in a situation that has plenty enough variables to deal with already.

I'd say it depends on your planned use,    a good 5-6x works very well for the gallery and 50 yd matches. And at 100 it works ok if its real good quality and the MVA appears to be.
But if you are looking at the 200 yard matches you might be better off with a scope with a few more XXX's AND excellent optics.

You would be hard put to find better optics than those used in the 6X MVA and DZ Arms scopes. Crystal clear out to 1000.

2X, I have both MVA (6x) and DZ (8x) scopes and they are crystal clear to 1,000 yds. You can't go wrong with either. I do prefer the DZ scope because of the extra power and the mounts are by far better than the MVA's for silhouette shooting. The adjustments are much more precise. I know of several shooters , including me, using MVA scopes with DZ mounts.

Thanks for the replies.  It helps to hear from those who have actually used a product.  I'm thinking I'll go with the MVA Winchester scope.  Realistically, most of my shooting will be at 100 yds or less and all of it informal so there's no real need to spend an extra 5 or 6 hundred bucks. If I had more $$$ I could buy more XXX's.

they really look nice and appropriate for the usage you describe as well as small game hunting.  Nothing looks much better on on a nice 22 rf lo-wall, Ballard, small Stevens, or a #2 'roller; and the modern made 'grasshopper" springs probably are much better than the vintage ones.

I have one of the MVA 5x scopes for offhand use.  Works fine for gallery or either 10 or 200 yards. Optics are OK for me.  Don't like the mounts.  Why they don't offer a model suited to standard scope blocks?

I have decided to leave the scope on my 3rd Model Winder.  I tried it on the Farrow, but the low scope mount plus the high walls on the Farrow action makes it very difficult to load and to extract fired cases.

If I were to do it again, I would find some externally click-adjustable mounts that fit standard scope blocks.
