Really enjoyed the articles in the current issue.  The Doc Hudson article with pictures was superb with the others following close behind.
A Tip of the Hat and Much Thanks!

an excellent issue and that article about what happens to our "stuff" after we are gone is worth the price of admission all by itself.   we have discussed it at various times here on the site but this is the first time I can ember seeing it presented in the Journal.

Also I think this is the first Journal that did not involve Single shot rifles with the cover photo  (admittedly Hudson was a highly regarded Single Shot marksman)   I'm sure this will create some fun.     Cheesy Grin

Great issue JOHN / AKA 40-Rod

Yes the article on what happens to our stuff was good. At some time everyone has to deal with this. My current plan is to have a local FFL sell all the collectable stuff on Gunbroker. The common hunting stuff will go into an estate auction with my other junk/good stuff. Like the local guy and he will handle it for a nominal fee.

I just finished reading the article on Dr. Hudson's trip.   It was a really enjoyable article to read.

What interested me was the 310gr nominal weight Ideal 375272 mold that Doc Hudson had Ideal design and consistently used the bullets for his excellent groups.  Plus the detail loading data & bullet alloy that he used
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Being curious, has anyone developed a smokeless powder charge and used the 375272 breech seated?

Primarily because the powders he used for his duplex loads are non existent today.  Am sure the groups would be excellent in the hands of a good marksman

I have the mold and never shot it breech seated because my Uberti HiWall does not have a 'specially relieved throat'.  My intent is to have the Shuttleworth's throat the HiWall and with a plugged case see what I can do to shoot decent groups

My wife says she will just box my stuff up and put it on the consignment rack at the local gun shop.  Someone will get a nice deal as no one there knows single shots.  I should make a plan or my nice originals will likely end up being bough cheap and rebarreled as hunting rifles.  That would be a bigger disaster than her loosing a few bucks.

I am glad to see the article has moved a few people to at least start thinking / talking about where your "stuff" will go.  That was my intention when writing the article.  Even in my own collection, I don't expect my wife and family to squeeze every penny out of it, but I am trying to protect them against predatory people.

I am glad you enjoyed the article,

Thanks for writing that article it put together a lot of different things that I have heard discussed in one very cohesive place.
One quick addition: While at the range a couple of years ago this subject came up. I had said that my wife had a list of a couple of people to let in to put my gun stuff in order and to price. To witch a collector said, “My wife has a list of about 30 people not to let in the house.

I just don't want my wife to sell any of it for what I told  her it cost.

Joe:  Very much appreciated your article!  While one of our sons owns a gun store and is very knowledgeable about most modern guns, he is not that familiar with my collection of Ballards, Winchester 1885s, Hepburns and a few other single shots. What really hit me is that I need to tag all the parts better so he knows what they are and go on. I do keep everything on my gun program (BurnSoft Gun Collection) on the computer along with numerous photos and serial numbers. Also I periodically make a back up paper copy and store it else where.
There are several guns our two sons like and will most likely keep, and in that case the oldest gets first pick and then they can alternate picks. That's what my older brother and I did with our parents small farm estate some years ago. If you have numerous kids you may wish to do it differently.
Thanks again Joe and also thanks for your diligence in disposing the estates of Mr. Willis and Michael Petrov.

I suspect that estate sales are how many rifles get separated from their accessories such as sight inserts, molds, false muzzles, breech seaters, etc.

That's one of the things I worry about.

Chris:  I agree on all the gun specific accessories. In my Gun program I have all the accessories listed, plus photos of each one so they will know the correct false muzzles, molds, breech seating tools, etc. that go with each rifle. I haven't logged or made photos of the sight inserts, I think I should add those too. Thanks for the suggestion.

I try to tag parts and sights and accessories with the description and serial # of the gun they go to if they are separated from the gun.
