Locking mold handles...any preferences?

My arthritic hands are causing me to have variable grip on the mold handles and this throws the weight variation out the window...casting fliers.  When I do my part I can keep them +/- 0.2 gr for 207 gr 32 cal bullets.

What are the thoughts on the R&J handles sold by Shilo vs the Cabintree handles sold by Buffalo Arms and others?  The price is within $5 for either or between $70 and $75.

The Demon lives in me too.

I have the CabinTree locking handles, and will NEVER go without them ever.

I have a pair of the CabinTree handles too.  I think the design has changed a bit from when I bought mine, but I like them quite a lot.

I like the idea of consistent pressure on the mold halves.  Several years ago Dan Theodore did some experimenting and found that bullets cast with the CabinTree handles were just a litl more consistent in diameter than those he'd cast with standard handles.  Anything that helps with consistency has got to be a good thing.  Well, almost anything Smiley

I use Ron Jordan's locking handles sold by Shiloh Sharps:

Ron's web page:

They are built a bit stronger, slightly better ergonomic design,  and will not twist or go out of alignment. A  better design than the Cabin Tree which is a bit more basic.

And with the Canadian dollar dropping in value they are cheaper.

Less bothersome for my arthritis.

Used the RJ for a while and they are better than "traditional", but the Cabintree I use now are the way to go. Especially the newest ones with the ability to lock the setting. As said above, get the Cabintree handles (made in the good ole USA) and you'll never go back.

I have an older cabine tree handle and just got a locking handle from Buffalo Arms.  I like the newer one from BA the best.  They are lighter that the older version and the adjustment is easier to make and it does not change during casting.  Also the handle has a definite 'stop' built-in to the handle travel.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Take a piece of bicycle tube and pull it over the handle, gives same pressure each cast and see how it works.
Cheap and easy.

That implies that a simple design for modifying existing handles might pop up here!  Hmmm.

But...then you have to use some effort to open the mould, no?

I've got the Buffalo Arms.   Have only used it once so far, but I like it, and will probably keep using it.

I'm thinking of a design, simple lever with spring/rubber-band to apply tension to closed mould.

USRCA112, I use a piece an inch wide from a bike  tire on my Paul lJones mould handles Thumb tack to one side slip other over opposite handle after casting and sprue cut slip off one side remove bullet slip back on just takes a fraction of a second to do with very little practice. I guess you could devise a set of handles to squeeze the blocks hard enough to make the cavity egg shaped but for what/ a well made mould should close well enough.

I have one of the R-J handles, and I wrapped the handle with bicycle handlebar tape for a better grip. I've used it a lot and I like it.

One more tip for those with arthritic hands. Replace the round handle with a shortened hammer handle it makes it much easier to grip and turn. I can’t take credit for this, I bought a set of Cabin tree handles from Steve Durren and he had added the handle. After one casting session I replaced all my handles with hammer handles.
