Two good things happened today: First, the .458 barrel blank that I ordered from BRC came in. I plan on using this on a 45-70 that I'm building, (but its a bolt action - Oh the blasphemy !

) And I went to watch my first single shot benchrest match this morning.
The match was at the Modesto rifle club, and it was very interesting. I learned a lot while I was there. The competitors were very friendly, and made me feel right at home. Not being involved in benchrest, I was astounded at the accuracy that these gentlemen were getting from their rifles. The average shooter or hunter would think that shooting such small groups at 200 yards with cast bullets would be close to impossible, but the fellows at this match did so with such skill that I couldn't help but be impressed.
The shooter there had the good natured comradeship and friendly banter which must have come from many seasons of shooting together. But, the moment the order that they could commence fire was given, each man's concentration became fixed upon his rifle, his equipment, and the target down range. Each of these guys was totally "in the zone", and for the brief time that they were shooting, that shooting bench was their whole world.
All the preparation and focus payed off though, and I got to witness some of the best shooting I've seen in many years. I've been invited to come and watch next months match, and I'm looking forward to going.
