25-20 SS Loads

I picked up a Stevens 25-20 SS at the Tulsa spring show. Now I am seeking load data. I searched the reload data topic and only found one load. Any load would be helpful.

What action?   My 44 1/2 handled a 1950 fps load of 5744 with an 86 grain jacketed easily, and killed quite a few chucks, but the typical "as-found" Model 44 will be very unhappy at that kind of pressure until it's been rebuilt, firing pin bushed, and breeched up tight with the shoulders bearing in the frame.

The action is a 44, and I will be shooting cast bullets.

Powders in the range of AA#9, 2400, (virtual twins), and 4227 work with typical 85 grain bullets seated in the case.   Load 5 grains and work up to 1450 fps.   I also use Blue Dot (faster than #9) at about 5.0 grains.

These loads can be double-charged.  Check and double-check each case to avoid.

This assumes that the lockup is still tight.  The lever should close with a decided "snap", and the BB should trap a piece of 0.4mil plastic bag on the breech face, and also at the rear on either side of the hammer.

The action is tight but it does not snap, minor force is needed to both close and open. The loaded rounds that came with the rifle I believe were loaded with 5744 as the barrel was very dirty and had unburned power. I have used this powder in the past and found it hard to clean after shooting. The rounds were custom made by a company called Aardvark.

Also what is the meaning of the BB in the last line of your post?

5744 doesn't begin to burn clean until you are above 20k psi., which is a bit much for an unrestored Model 44.  Been there, done that.  Not suitable for Model 44 loads IMHO.

BB=breechblock

Do the feeler gage check.  Later model 44s have a spring plunger in the lever to prevent droop.  Do not confuse with good, tight breeching.

Ron,
With the Lyman 257420 bullet (nominal 65 grain and easiest mould to find) mine prefers 6.8 grains of H108. Others that had a chance were 8 grains of 4759, 8.5 grains of 4227, and 7.5 grains of 2400. One of these should get you in the ball park.
