Heck, John, I said plain enough to shoot it with either powder. I couldn't come and load 'em for him, but if I did, it would be smokeless no matter What caliber it is. I don't hold with that smoky stuff.  Pat

The original cartridge was .22 WCF and the barrel was  changed to .22 Hornet. I have tried black and 4 gn of unique but not together. The rifle is a flat spring model. The rate of twist is 16. I was just curious if there were other safe smokless powders for this rifle? Thanks for your answer, Hank

Hank,

Did you ever try a bullet heavier than that 33 grain flat nose that you mentioned using?

The original WCF was factory loaded until the mid 1930s and I'm guessing this involved smokeless by then. The loading with the original 45 grain .228 diameter bullet was to 1550 fps. With your new barrel you should certainly be safe with a 40-45 grain Hornet bullet at this velocity with smokeless. The lowall I had back when was in K-Hornet and I certainly loaded it hotter than that with no ill effects. Maybe I can find my old loading notes.

My old Hornet alway did well with good ol' 4227 powders. (Heck, almost everything does good with that stuff.) There are lots of loads cited for the Hornet, all over, but keeping it down to less than the max always shot the most accurately. That would fall into place with the load advice above from oneatatime.  Pat

Oh, what I originally intended to mention when I got off on the mid-range loading for the Hornet is that if I stepped it up to the max, not only did accuracy head south, but the brass followed it at a high rate, too. There, now I'm done here.

Don't give up on the 300MP, its claim to fame is in the 22 Hornet with approx. 200fps faster velocity than all the others currently available with less pressure.

When did Winchester start using smokeless powder in their 1885 rifles? The reason I ask is that I own a low wall manufactured in 1898 and I was curious about using some light smokeless loads Thanks for your answer, Hank45

Jack's question is a good one.

In the Apr 1894 catalog, for the hiwall rifle, WRA introduced the .30 U.S. ARMY cartridge using Smokelss Powder 40grs, Steel Jacketed Bullet 220grs.
In the Aug 1895 catalog, WRA introduced the smokeless 22 Short loading, the smokelss 32 WCF (32-20) loading, the smokeless 38 WCF (38-40) loading, and a sprinkling of other smokeless loadings.
Additional smokeless loadings for other cartridges showed up at various times in later catalogs.
In 1898, WRA issued two different catalogs (Mar and Oct), both of which show the lowwall carbine chambered in 44 WCF (44-40). Both catalogs show a smokeless 44 WCF loading as well.

Both catalogs also contain the statement by WRA which says:
"Reloading Smokelss Powder Cartridges Impracticable."

Don't do it Hank, just don't do it!    Grin

I have a low wall winchester that I chambered a 22 K Hornet with
a heavy 28" 1.125 dia. Barrel and use smokless 2400 powder.
Haven't had any trouble with it. Mine was a 22 Cal RF to start
with. Does a fine job on varments out to 200 yards.
Just keep the cartridge a bit on the small side

Does smokeless powder help in giving up smoking? If yes, I must buy it and use it.  Cheesy
