OK.......... here are the measurements provided from an actual, original, loaded (never fired) 40-65 Everlasting Ballard cartridge:
LOA is 2.360, rim is .560, rim thickness is .070, dia. at rim is .474, 0D at mouth is .435, id at mouth is .397.
Pretty close to the dimensions listed by Dutcher.

As a point of reference, today I received a 40-82 Silhouette case from BACo. They use Starline 45-90 brass as their starting case and I will guess they form the brass using the 40-82 Silhouette dies they sell. The dimensions are:
Rim - 0.600"
Head - 0.498"
Mouth - 0.424"
Length - 2.392"

In discussions with others, I talked with one well-known BPCR rifle builder who feels that any 40cal cartridge with more powder capacity than a 40-70SS will not reach the winners circle as it has too much powder and cannot burn it all in a 30" barrel. As it only holds 1.3% more powder than the 40-70SS, I'm skeptical of his thinking. Plus, my barrel is 32" long. Wink

There is some good discussion of the 'modern' 40-82 cartridges (very similar to the 40-65 Ballard) in the Black Powder section of the Shiloh Sharps forum for those who might be interested.

Also received this reamer design by Dan Theodore (may he RIP) from Steve Rhoades (an AZ gunsmith) a couple of days ago. He should it shortly and uses this cartridge for his 800/900/1000yd shooting. The way one resizes 45-90 brass is to set a 40-65 FL sizing die so it is 0.300" short of the rim. Very simple.
