I bought this Stevens from Chuck Bordman a couple of years ago and just began to investigate its internals.  It was modified by Bill Crane and is dated 12-80 along with his name on the Douglas XX barrel, butt stock and butt plate.  It has an adjustable trigger and removable lower trigger guard ala the double set trigger models.  There is also a stock through bolt.  It shoots very well.  Chuck had seller's remorse a couple of hours after I took possession of it.  According to Westerner and Schuetzenmeister there is a bit of history surrounding this rifle at Tacoma matches.

Looks like a 44 1/2 hammer & mainspring, everything else looks correct.         ...MIKE...

Ballards may be weaker,

Pretty neat little 44! I like a custom single, when it's well done!

Jack.
What are the markings on the face of the action? From the pictures, it looks to be a unmodified 44 frame. If so, it should at least be marked 45 or 47.

Is that the rifle that you had a FP problem with at Spokane?

I will check the markings tonight.  Yep I broke the firing pin due to my error. I made a new one from an aircraft grade bolt.  I need to test it one more time at the range. My first test would not dent enought for some ammo. I was able to relieve the shoulder a bit and get more depth.  I should be able to put a new tip on the original as well.  I tried the pin from my 25 cal 44, but it had a significantly smaller diameter.

Frank,

It is marked 44  and on the other side 00.  The receiver is a well polished plum color while the lower tang is blued.  I suspect that the receiver was milled out for the lower tang.

I'd have to agree - as far as I have seen, the plain 44 was not furnished with set triggers at any time.  Lotsa work went into making that gem!

It must have been a special order 44, with DST or the extremely rare SST. The problem with just milling the frame for the trigger plate on the 44, is it leaves the trigger screw hole and it doesn't look like yours has been filled.

It's a great rifle and I hope to see you get to shoot it next time.

I have a good friend that has a 44 in 22lr that has a double set trigger. I was with him when he bought it at a gun show in Cadillac Mi.
The rifle was really butchered up when he got it. It had a 414 front stock with a sporting rear stock. Really looked funny but it shot like a new CPA. He didn't even try dickering on the price of 500 bucks.
