I dunno about guns, but I had a client 40 years ago who made woodworking tools for Sears to slap their name on.  That was long before China took over that sector of the business.   The nickname for them was "promotional grade".  They pretended that they were equal ("compare to") to Craftsman, and unless you looked close you could hardly tell the difference in the newsprint ads, until you looked at the part numbers.  Wally World didn't invent that game.

A good read.
A bit off topic, but with so many firearms being purchased through the internet these days, it's most important to support our local dealers, lest they perish and all we're left with is Wally world. My local owner says the markup on new guns is very small. As yang to the yin, he does make $25 on transfers from internet buyers.

When I buy new guns, which is not very often, I buy from local dealers who frequent the gun shows in the region. They also have regular stone and mortar business locations. More convenient to buy at the guns shows. Buy at one show and pick up at the next one to comply with the waiting period. Buy some old guns at shows by most on Gunbroker and some from the good people here.

  I hope you enjoyed Doctor Clary's article as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.  It is so much on point, since someone of the Forum participants wanted you to believe that a Ruger No. 1 from Wal-Mart is exactly the same as a Ruger No. 1 from an up-scale retail dealer; which Doctor Clary alleges emphatically is not the case at all.

Doctor James (Jim) Clary has his Master of Science degree in Fisheries Biology and a Ph.D degree in Zoology (major) and Physiology (minor).

I thought it would be refreshing to introduce Doctor Clary here at ASSRA as a welcomed contributor.  Please see Doctor Clary's web site for other related materials which may be of interest to you;

First off, having degrees in fisheries and zoology does not qualify him as a person that can judge the quality of a firearm by what other people say.  If you think Ruger built rifles of different qualities to sell at different prices, you're dead wrong.  Bill would never allow it.  Yes, some gun companies did make firearms of various values but they were marked differently so the consumer new it.  Many carried trade names even though they were made by Winchester or Stevens.  That was all part of the game to maximize sales to people of various incomes.  In the last 40 yrs or more, big box stores put the small owners out of business because of volume discounts.  When I worked in gun sales, our distributor's catalogs had 4 or 5 tiers of prices.  The more you bought, the lower the price.  You could buy 5 Ruger 77's or a 100 but at different dealer prices.  The quality was always the same. Sadly, many customers would come in to our store to pick the brains of the sales people and then drive over to a big box store and buy the rifle at a lower price than we could buy it from the distributor.

When I read that article, I get the impression that he's just advising us to support the local stores, lest  they go away. And, if he's doing just that, he's absolutely right. Not just guns- hardware, clothing, food and even other stuff fits the pattern. That said, I have a model 94 that's marked "Ted Williams" that still shoots well, and a friend's children and grandchildren all learned to shoot with a Marlin knockoff that he bought for about 40 bucks, 40-odd years ago at a Kmart store. But, I like going where they 'talk the lingo". Pat
