What happened to my "blown cases" thread?

Disappeared.  Okay, will start it again.

Hi guys.  Your opinions as to why these cases failed. Aydt rifle. Cases fired while closing the action. No firing pin strike.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Aydt rifle. LR chamber, LR ammo.

JOE:
The AYDT has a lot of camming power.   I'm guessing that you got a 22LR ctg ahead of the extractor, which fired when you closed the action.

Looks like the mouth of the front case was fireformed by the barrel.   Measure back to where the case was not supported by the chamber and you've got the chamber length and an idea what RF cartridge will fit that chamber.

Aydt rifle with long rifle chamber. Ammo was RWS Long Rifle. Mouth of the case did not expand due to the lack of pressure caused by the big hole in the case.

Rifle was being loaded and fired in a very dark place. First nine shots functioned normal.

Did both bullets leave the barrel?  And did you see bullet holes for shots 1 thru 9?

I have had 3 odd experiences with Fiocchi SM-200s. More anon.

Pull some bullets & look at how the primer is spread on the inside of the cases.  If there was priming compound on the inside of the case wall, near the mouth, seating the ctg in a match chamber might set it off.

Had a similar but not exact problem with my Aydt recently. Firing on closing the action but with firing pin strikes.  Called Steve Durren who suggested a worn sear.  Sent the rifle to Steve and got it fixed.  Works like a charm...

Joe, Do both cases show the same kind of rupture?
It looks to me (Looking at the case on the right) like the edge of the rim is sort of smear/crushed rather than struck by a firing pin.
Since you were shooting in reduced lighting could it, as was suggested, have been caught by the extractor and crush-fired without observing a mis-load?
Were the two misfires consecutive or spread over the course of a match?

Just have a description of the incident and the picture shown. Not my rifle or incident.  Shooter was not wearing shooting glasses and suffered injury to the shooting eye. Injury is not serious.

Seems obvious to me that the cartridge was ahead of the extractor. Extractor set off the cartridge as the breech block was closing.

Incident rifle. Is a Reform Schmitt und Habermann. Very similar to the Aydt system.

shooting from a dimly lit shooting house I'm assuming.  I'm just surprised that it happened twice. One assumes the injury causing incident was the final of the two.   Any chance, given the traditional aspects of German shooting,   (see I'm stringing assumptions like beads) of "impaired shooting"?

The bulge from the extractor slot is nicely in line with the dent from the front of the extractor. Presumably, the case seated in the chamber fully, the extractor crushed the rim into the extractor slot, firing the case, and the case pushed back against the extractor which managed to cam the block away a little, while the unsupported area finally burst. I doubt that .22 cases have uniform thickness from the center of the base all the way to the edge of the rim, given the drawing process, so perhaps the case gets a little thinner in front of the rim, causing the burst where it did, along with the split up the case wall. Lucky shooter to have escaped without significant injury. I still have a little piece of brass in my cheek from a reloading error, and count myself as very fortunate.
