What is a good/safe powder for use in a 117 year old .22 Hornet lo-wall action other than black? Thanks for your answer, Hank

The Hornet, one of my favorites!

Is the rifle really a Hornet?   Or a .22 WCF?

Safety is in the load, not the powder choice.

In Hornet, I have good results with moderate loads of Lil-Gun when using condom bullets.  Slightly faster than 4227, but  has a "fat tail" to the pressure/time curve so it yields a bit higher velocity for any given  peak pressure.  Not knocking 4227, mind you.   Ten grains of either is good with a 45 grain soft point.  Better yet the 35 grain V-Max.  Sure kills on woodchucks under 100 yards at ten grains.

Eleven grains if the rifle is tight, 11.5 if the firing pin has been bushed properly.

Shooting cast, I liked 2.2 grains of Red Dot for 40 grain plain base, but I sold the mould, due to ignorance. Bullseye would be a good substitute.
