J.D. Steele Memorial

DATE: 04 May 2015
TO: Mrs. Cindy Harz
SUBJECT: Memorial to Mr. Joe Harz, a/k/a "J.D. Steele"

Hello Mrs. Harz :

I would like you to know that I always enjoyed and greatly appreciated my communications with your husband, Joe, and learned so much from him while he was a member of the A.S.S.R.A. Forum.

He was a very generous person with his time and  knowledge and I missed him enormously when he left to move to the Double Gun Forum.  I also knew Joe's friend, Mr. Whitey Hanson, and I easily recognized that Joe and Whitey were both men whom I respected and looked up to for reliable single shot information.

My wish is that you feel, and are, secure in the fact that Joe lived a purposeful life and he was an inspiration to those of us who were just starting out in new territory which Joe had already covered.

Respectfully and with blessings,

Webb
Washington, D.C.

P.S. Later today, I will pass this link to someone in order that you may receive my sentiment at the Double Gun Forum.

Marlin Guy --

Vall, that was a kind note that you left for Mrs. Harz.  It is difficult for me to realize that it has been two years since J.D. Steele's passing.

Did you know Whitey very well?  Do you remember when Whitey had a lathe for sale ?  Been about three years ago.  I was going to stop at his place on my way to Colorado, but he got a buyer for it, as I recall.

Yes Webb, I knew Whitey even better than I knew Joe! We talked often by phone or email, and had numerous similar interests. Whitey and I did a lot of gun trading, especially when Whitey got sidetracked from single shots, and started getting into Marlin lever actions!
I still have guns and parts I traded or bought from Whitey. He had a very neat residence which was an old John Deere dealership in Joe's, Co., which served as home and huge work shop. Whitey did a lot of buying and selling of machine tools also, so he often had tools for sale that he had purchased.
Whitey was a real renaissance man, and always surprised me with his many talents. He did some design work for Pedersoli (away from guns!) and David personally sent Whitey a hand built muzzleloader as a thank you. I still have that muzzloader, as we did a trade that included it.
Joe and Whitey were cut from a different cloth than we find today. I can't tell you how many times I dealt with both men, and simply sent items, and knew they'd send me funds when they saw what I sent to them. Not often that we discussed prices, as we knew both would do the right thing. I sure miss them both!

Thanks Vall for that.  I never met up with Whitey, but we had planned to do so.  He apparently lived close to the I-70 heading west at one of the exits, so going to Colorado Springs and Durango we drove within approx 5 miles of his place.  The engine lathe that I was talking to Whitey about was sold within a week of our leaving for our hunting trip.  We were planning on paying Whitey on the way out and then stop with the trailer to pick it up on the way home

We stayed friends and I knew about him becoming sick in a serious way.

Yes, Joes, Co. is about 15-20 miles east of Denver off 36, which is north of 70 a bit.
Whitey was an old hotrodder also, and in his younger years built a lot of cars, for himself, and others. Often trading work for guns or gun projects! A very skilled mechanic!
