Procured an 11mm Mann/Werndl SRC rolling block!

Man I get some winners (Read: odd crap)

I have a nice nickel plated or some such 11MM Werndl SRC. The bore is good, very good. Not excellent, a few fine pits, will clean up to a VG condition. Will make a good shooter, maybe a great shooter and its the nicest SRC Ive had (all others Ive had were 7mm).

BUT!!! Its a gosh darn Werndl. I know what that is, a money pit!!

Its missing a forend, band and rear sight. Its a fine shape piece for full restoration but I like SHOOTERS, not safe queens. Ill buy the parts for it but Im hoping there is a member who has been getting away with using 44-77 brass and 43 spanish dies to first fireform. That came straight out of my rear end as an option. No serious thought put into it or measurements made. Im beside myself with another odd duck I need tooling for. Every dadgum thing I own is a wildcat or an obsolete.

Any insight into the value of such item relative to the average 43 Sp SRC in similar condition? Meaning is it an esoteric item? Any way to tell if remington did the rechamber (1 of 300) or if Monte in Bupkiss, Miss did it and stamped the barrel?? (Read: Importer or BUBBA)

Im not going to jump through any more hoops for rolling block brass. Im up to my ears in forming. Id just as soon screw a new barrel on it, if Im not damaging a RARE item. Is there a big market for barrels in UBER OBSOLETE status?? LOL

Thanks in advance for any insight or facts that can be presented.

Mike

George Layman, in his newer book on the military rolling block rifles of the world page 229, writes about the origin of these rechambered rifles and carbines. They are the work of Bill Wescombe. Bill was ever looking for a way to  make money in the antique firearms industry. In addition to being the largest supplier of rolling block parts at that time, Bill purchased a rather large quantity of the 11mm Mannlicher ammunition. Having no firearms in which to use the ammo he decided to rechamber a few of his rolling blocks and so offer customers a deal; cheap ammo and a rifle in which they could use it.  I asked Bill about the rifles and he related the story. He found the "historical articles" written on the genesis of these firearms humorous.  Unfortunately some of the new chambers were not well done badly distorting cases as well as impeding or precluding extraction.

I have a solution.

John Taylor will be getting another barrel for reboring.
I verified the 50-70 will just clean up (pre-chamber cast study)the chamber and I can have him rebore to 50 cal. Nobody but me will know that it wasnt originally a 50-70 when Im done. Well you guys will know.

I love the 50-70. Its perfect for a carbine, just perfect. And low enough cost with good results to make it very much worth while!
Ill need to setback 1 turn to make it clean and get a rim recess back to dimension.

COOL BEANS. Dont even need to weld up the extractor!!
