Loading 32-40 with a Lee Hand Loader

I have a original Winchester High Wall made in 1888, No.3, 30 inch octagon barrel, SST, plain sporting rifle, chambered in .32-40. According to the Cambell books it has a 1 in 16 twist. The bore is far from perfect with decent rifling at the muzzle and considerable pitting in the throat, but I can make out lands and grooves. I want to shoot it off hand and maybe some off of a bench. I have new Winchester brass and would like to load with smokeless powder using a Lee Hand Loader. I have loaded .270 with a Lee Hand Loader 25-30 years ago so I am familiar with this method.

What are some recommended loads?

Thanks,
Bill

The Lee loader really wasn't designed for cast bullets..so you will need a way to expand the case mouth so as not to damage lead bullet in seating.  With a gas-check bullet design, you can get away with a tighter neck I.D., and perhaps might proove more accurate in your pitted bore..but they are not legal in ASSRA matches.  Best of luck!

Do you have a powder measure, or will you be using Lee dippers. Check the instructions that came with your loader. Lee usually offers a few loads with their tools.

Thanks for the responses. I have ordered a set of RCBS CAS .32-40 dies and will get an RCBS loading outfit and go this route rather than the Lee Loader route. I want to load .45-70 Gov't and .44-40 also so I might as well start reloading.

Good idea! I see RCBS presses (and other quality brands also) at our local gun shows often. Almost always at a nice savings over new, and used reloading equipment is almost always as good as it was new. There was a nice RCBS press at our last show for $50, and it went pretty quickly. I see scales and powder measures around $15-$20 each often also.
