Just an FYI to anyone interested in homebrewing lube. I recently bought a couple quarts of 1500wt steam cylinder oil from Lubrication Specialties

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

for use in the enclosed front knuckles of my 1967 F-250. I know that a lot of the old time bullet lube recipes call for various steam cylinder oils and thought some of you might find the website interesting in that most of these oils are made to "old school" recipes using animal fats and lards vs. modern synthetics. If you call, ask for Bill and he will be more than happy to elaborate on details. Who knows, maybe the long lost Leopold recipe is hiding there! Wink

Nope.....the 50wt they call for would all be on the garage floor in 2 weeks even with the new seals installed. Most guys now mix 80/90 with grease. My 1500wt flows at the rate of one pint per (3) beers per side. Sorry for the pic, I couldn't resist.

Harry Pope's Lube ...
Six ounces mutton tallow.
Four ounces bay wax. (Bay berry wax)
Two ounces beeswax.
Two ounces steam cylinder oil.
170 grains (two heaping teaspoons full) of Acheson's graphite.
Melt the ingredients in a double boiler, and agitate while cooling to aviod precipitation.
If this lubricant proves too hard for use during cold weather, omit the bay wax, which will usually aid in tightening the groups.

Acheson's graphite.
In one variety of graphite, No. 1340, 98 per cent, of the graphite particles are less than 3^ in. in diameter. From this or similar graphite Dr. Acheson produces what he calls deflocculated graphite by kneading it for a long time with water in the presence of a vegetable extract, such as tannic acid; the graphite particles in this process disintegrate into particles one thousand times less in diameter, in fact, Dr. Acheson estimates that each particle of the "1340"  graphite becomes divided into 700,000 particles, a smallness of size bordering on the molecular, and the graphite becomes diffused in the water in colloidal form.

Been using steam cylinder oil in bullet lube for years. Don't know if it helps anything. Sounds good though.  Wink
