From the time I was old enough to shoot my father drilled cleaning a rifle into me. It may have been his Marine Corps training or the fact that when he started shooting mercuric primers were all you could get but when you used a gun you cleaned it as soon as you came home. I have learned to clean my barrels until there is just some cooked lube in the bore and I know that big time rimfire shooters say not to clean the bore until its time to put it up for the year but my dad still whispers in my ear. So I run a wet patch and a dry patch through the bores of my rimfires every time I get home after a day of shooting.

Wipe it with a lightly lubed patch, put it away. Never change ammo brands.

I think most shooters learned cleaning techniques in the military were its a discipline and needed for reliability in harsh conditions.  Scrubbing target rifles dies them no good

Google up the term "carbon ring", for instance, see what you learn. This is about the only place left in the known universe still left that does'nt clean. Gotta give you credit for pure determination though. Damn that science and those lying borescopes.

Tim scrubbing is not settled science.  Rim fire shooters In the international disciplines do not scrub barrels unless needed. Use the same quality ammo it's not needed often method shown in the video is the norm.

Buy Eley or RWS run the gun on the same ammo all season a few quick wipes is all it needs between matches. Total take down off season clean everything throughly back together shot until it settles down then leave it alone.

Gear heads with brightly painted rimfire rifles running from one Internet idea to the next are not always right. No doubt they have to clean more often due to constantly testing ammo looking for the holly Grail, cheap that shoots better than expensive.

The internet forum comment is interesting. Not valid, but interesting.
If you go to virtually any major match you will see a pretty standardized regimine.
I have been quite fortunate in my rimfire life to also have access to international shooters, national position shooters, prone shooters, and information from olympic medal winners.....sponsered by ammunition mfgs.
That includes builders of international team guns.
It is all the same my friend........they clean........regularly.
Chrome moly.....SS.....you want the very best from a reasonably capable .22 firearm.......clean it.

Of course you are quite free to believe as you wish .

I have shot a fair amount of International all in Australia and use Eley wipe the bore was the routine, and I see from the link Eley still recommends simple wiping.  No doubt some Top level American shooters believe strongly in frequent cleaning Lones Wigger was one.

But there is no strong consensus for rimfire scrubbing outside the rimfire bench shooters. It's still a open question and while I respect your observations it's not a hard rule.

Each will make his own mind up.

Re-reading my comment on Internet advice and brightly painted guns was not appropriate and have deleted

One possible reason for the wipe clean vs scrub clean debate is the match rifles are actually used in. Most Position matches either Small Bore Prone or Silhouette you have very limited access to sighing shots.  On match day I have always preferred to use my sighting shots holding dead center with the most adverse wind condition.

Hole on paper is the best indicator of what you can expect the wind to do during the actual match. From that strike generally no more than 2-5 shots I plan my wind strategy  Getting into positing holding center and observing the strike you have to be absolutely sure of the rifles zero. It's it's been scrubbed after the last use zero is questionable.

Does frequent cleaning help in a match that's decided with group size and no reference to point of impact on the target ? could be.

All my rimfire rifles and centerfire rifles function and shoot most accurate when cleaned on a regular basis. Have proved that to myself on several occasions.

Pushing a felt plug through the bores will not remove fouling and lead that builds up in bores. Never use a brush. Hoppes and cotton or paper based cleaning patches work best. Less chance for bores to be ruined during transport to and from matches.
If there is a long time between relays, I push a wet patch through the bore then a dry patch. Some of my rifles will shoot hundreds and hundreds of rounds during a match without needing to be cleaned, others will not. Occasionally get leading in bores, new and old.
