I have the RCBS Chargemaster and it is great! I load my cases at home and hold the powder in with a wad for breach seating at the range or match.
I have also used the Belding and Mull and would highly recommend it also. Don't know about the others except I did try a lyman once and did not like it. Your mileage may vary, as they say Joe S

I use a Redding 10X pistol measure for small charges of #9 in my 32 Miller Short. It is very accurate and repeatable. Years ago, I develped the habbit of tapping the handle against the stop 2 times at the top and again 2 times at the bottom. Consistant procedures are the key to consistant volumes of powder. If I started all over I would buy a Harrells, but I had this 10X already and it works great.

As suggested by many, getting to know your particular powder measure is a must. Not really any different than becoming "one" with your rifle.

I've owned and used most of them, and had extremely good luck with them all. Still use Lyman 55's and a Redding 3BR for other than Schuetzen .

The only real advantage I can see is the click adjustments of the Harrell. If you take the time to learn what the Harrell will throw with your powder of choice, you can easily tune your charge on the line.

Bottom line for me is the Harrell is what I use for Schuetzen. I have absolute trust in what I dial in.

Well I will put in my 2 cents now that I am an expert, after all I  have owned my cpa for just under a year. all jokes aside for someone on a budget it is hard to beat a belding & mull. they can be picked up for quite a bit less than the bench rest measures. I have seen quite a few go for around a hundred bucks or so. it is slow but it works. currently I use it to load my cpa at the range. I would have never believed I would be breach seating but have come to enjoy it. I have my rifle ready to go to the range tomorrow. currently I own 2 belding and mull measures one for taking to the range and one for my reloading bench. it is the only measure that I have found that works well with sr4759. and yes I know they quit making it but I still have over 12 lbs, and it works for me. argie1891

I managed to get a hold of some Accurate #9 but I find it won't work well in my Lyman 55 powder measure.   The granules are so fine they immediately bind up the measure.

I'm looking to purchase a new powder measure and am looking for input.

I have a gift certificate from Redding which allows me to purchase any product at 1/2 price.

I'm looking at their "Competition Model 10X"   and would appreciate any input upon it's suitability.

Also any other recommendations.

Thanks.

If you have a 1/2 off Redding certificate, the best bang for your buck (no pun intended) is the Redding 3BR with both the rifle and pistol micrometers.  I personally use a Harrell's measure but would not hesitate to use a 3BR.

As I recall, some years ago, while virtually snowed-in in New Mexico, Bob Birmley spent quite a bit of indoor time doing a comprehensive, side-by-side evaluation of powder measures.  Bob's work was subsequently published in The Fouling Shot.

Someone on this Board probably has the article or can at least reference the correct issue.

JackHughs

The article was in the Fouling Shot #197 Jan-Feb. 2009

He compared a Hornady, a Redding and Belding an Mull. His winner was the Belding and Mull, he tested them all with Ball ,flake and stick powder.

Like has been stated by others, the only advantage I have found with the Little Harrells is the click adjustment.

The disadvantage to the B&M is the need for a funnel to get the powder in the case while using the same case during a match. I shot that way for several years in CBA prior to purchasing my Harrel and with a 10 minute time limit for score it didn't leave much if anytime to go back to the sighter and at times a real push to just get all the shots off for score. In an ASSRA Match the time limitations would not be as much of a concern. Also if the need arose to adjust the powder charge a tenth or two while shooting a CBA score target with the Harrel it was just a few simple clicks away and not so with any of the other measures mentioned.

I made several powder charge tubes out of 1/2 inch brass on my lathe. I really would like a Harrell but the cost and the fact I already own the B&M just doesn't make it a priority. I have found the funnel easy to use I put the primed case on the funnel that is upside down get a charge of powder and turn it over and charge case. I haven't found a measure that works with 4759 except the belding and mull. that isn't going to be an issue when I shoot up the 13 lbs I currently have as it is no longer made.

Harrell measure users; would the pistol and schuetzen measure work well with large grain powders, such as Unique? I use this powder more often than any other, charges of 8-15 grains. I use an electronic scale and a i throw and trickle. If i am to purchase a measure, it must work with Unique.  Thank you.

Good question but as I don't use Unique I cannot give you an honest answer. I have tried using 410 a flake powder in my 32-40 and it did not fair very well in the Harrel for me. If Unique is also a flake powder it might not fair very well either? It metered good but the tiny flakes and or powder dust had a tendency to want to jam the powder drum.

Thank you JLouis. Unique is indeed large disk shaped flakes. Bummer.
But, I've gotten used to the Lee dipper/powder trickler/electronic scale, and i use them quite fast. An added bonus is that i have a routine and i charge cases and seat bullets one a time, avoiding double charges (except once). Also, my powder charges are literally identical.

Hmmm.  I'm using Lyman #55's.
There is quite a variation in clearances between vintages.  The older one's are smoother and some have tight clearances.  No problems with Bulls Eye, 2400, 4227, Unique or other FINE powders - IF I pick the right one.  That is an issue if you just want to buy ONE - might be a crap shoot.

If I use a Lyman 55 with the plastic hopper will I risk blowing things up if I use black powder?  It seems I've heard this rumor but don't know if it's true or if it's just another legendary theory.  As an aside, never get rid of anything, ever.  I had a B&M given to me 20 years ago that I never used so I sold it.  Now that I want to load black, it's gone.

I have heard the lyman 55 is safe to use with black powder. that said I have not ever done it. I would think the best bet would be to listen to what the members of this forum say or maybe go to a black powder forum and see what they use. I have a spare belding mull measure but haven't decided if I want to sell it. plus I don't really know how much one is worth. joe g.

A good cure to the static thing with a 55 is to make a brass hopper for it.
