Pulaski,
Myself, and two other fellows comprised the workforce at Single Shot Inc. The rifles were made with Douglas barrels to begin with, but then transitioned to Badger barrels for the balance of the production. We managed to produce about 120 finished rifles and probably another 70 barreled actions by the time the venture was purchased by C. Sharps Arms and dissolved into their production . The actions were rough cast from 4140 steel, with the smaller parts cut from extruded bars of 8620 (as I recall). The entire operation was based out of Ed's shop, on his ranch near Big Timber. Several different local people did the stock fitting. This was a tiny, but well equipped shop, with an experienced labor force. No CNC equipment, just "dinosaur iron" mills and lathes, and a ton of hand fitting. Most original Winchester parts should fit with very little fitting. Over the long term, the very delicate nose of the firing pin proved to be brittle, and many were re-fit to use original Winchester firing pins (not difficult).
It was a great product, with sales just starting to get brisk, but the overhead was too high to produce a quality product at a competitive price. Rather than cheapen the product, Ed made the tough decision to sell the operation. Earl, Tom G., Ed, and I had poured our hearts into the project and it proved very hard to walk away from....
Nice find! (I don't even have one, anymore !
