Well, Dave, now that I reread what you REALLY wrote, I'm going to have to rethink what to do, won't I? There is still that little niggling in my head concerning the precious old barrel, but the possibility of finding a truly accurate .32-40 load without the hassle of breach seating is tempting.
As it is now, the thing will stay inside of an inch, sometimes well inside, with the best loads on a good day. Mostly using 4227, or 4759 with bullets ranging from 175 to 200 grains. Fixed. Breech seated, I only do a little better, but that's about my ability. Maybe there isn't any more in the rifle, after all it's over a hundred and twenty years old! But, the quest to find a nice fixed load is a real fun undertaking if you know what I mean. Again, guys, all of you, Thanks I'm having fun here. Pat

Pat,
If your 32/40 will stay under 1" @ 100. I'm sure that we all would like to know everything about your load and how it's assembled.

Thank you,

Frank

First the disclaimer: I said it would do that in the good times. It will, and I'll get back to the loads in a moment. Most of the time with the same loads it will stay in an inch and a half. But, on the good days- it's and mine together-five shot groups inside of an inch happens.
The loads are simple enough: 14 grains of IMR4227, Federal 210, cases trimmed to same length carefully with all the other basic case prep for uniformity, bullet cast in half wheelweight, half soft with a large dose of tin to about a bhn of 9.5 (borrowed a tester so may be off due to unfamiliarity). Mold is an ancient Ideal 321232 without vents but in great shape. Lube is a homemade one from Johnson past wax, Vaseline, Parafin and Lee Alox cooked together slowly (good all year from ten degrees to as hot as a hundred) Overall length is 2.805 in my rifle's factory throat. This wedges the cartridge in firmly enough that I'm really cautious if I need to unload before firing since it might de-bullet. (that happened once and made the usual mess).
The rifle is an original Winchester with a single set trigger, 32 inch #4 barrel that hase survived without any internal blemish that I could see with a scope. It is, of course equipped with a scope, in this case, a 6-18 power one. It came from the upper midwest back in the 1950s, and I acquired it a good while ago, so  no real history. I have always believed it is just one of those good ones that happens in factories now and then. I'll try to figure out how to send a target somehow. Honest, I aint trying to jerk yer chain. that's a lot of typing for me. Pat
p.s. Like I said, it only does a bit better breachseated.

I was going to try them yesterday but the wind was not cooperating.  The wads did not fair too well on the wind.  A gust blew the plastic bag off the bench and scattered half of them who knows where. Could that be a sign?

Jack,
When I tried them, I kept them in a plactic bag at the bench. Even then, a breeze blew them off the bench.

I think the only way to use them, with any success, is to pre-charge the cases, as Dave does and I hate making up a bunch of cases, after shooting one case for so long.

My CPA 32-20 likes the powder shaken forward before chambering  the case.  Kinda hard to do that without foam/insulation in the mouth.....
