40-65 and BACO 409445 (at 400gr)

Just started playing with the BACO 409445 in a CPA 40-65.

12 lbs is a little heavier than the Ruger #1 Tropical in .405 Win that I'm used to.

Bullet casts at .410-.411 and the bore-riding portion engraves JUST RIGHT!

Tried a couple dozen rounds this afternoon with 20 gr of 4227.  Only off-hand, but it was obvious from the manner in which the little targets (rocks, pieces of wood etc.) on the 100yd berm were disappearing that this combination is going to be FUN!

What alloy did you use to get a nominal 444gr bullet to cast at 400gr?

some mystery metal - likely a LOT of tin and ww.
Next batch will be 20:1

(that got my attention too, but since I had only a couple dozen cast and they fit so well they got launched.)

edit:  20:1 cast tonight ran 431-432gr.  much softer too.

Worked up several loads (432gr BACo bullet) but was getting a bit of tipping at 100; therefore not good potential for 200yds.

Switched to RCBS 40-350 and 19-20-21-22-23 gr of 4227.  Best was 22 for 10 shot 2 to 2-1/2" group at 100yds (iron sights).  Not GOOD, but significantly better.  Will tweek.

Thoroughly enjoying it.  At 12 lbs it's a bit heavy for off-hand, but I'll work up to it.

Been using the .405Win in Ruger #1 and also in the Japanese HiWall.

Bore/Groove for the 3 (measured with an un-calibrated digital caliper):

CPA:  .400/.408
R#1:  .404/.412
HW:   .402/.412

The Ruger is the most comfortable to shoot from the shoulder, Winchester has better sights, but the CPA is far above either in quality, sights, trigger, fit-finish and more.

I'm liking the RCBS 40-350 in them all.  Have tried the 40-300, which is ok too, and have several other moulds to try.

interesting scoop, cat - thanx.

i just got a pedersoli '74 sharps sihouette in .40-65win, 30" heavy octo barrel, with a .400 bore and .408 groove (using my digital calipers).  i pulled off all the barrel sights and replaced 'em with a lee shaver hadley soule rear tang and spirit level front globe - ah, mo' bettah!  spent the weekend casting 1:20 lead using an rcbs 40-400 bps mould that drops for me @ 409 grains each, .410" diameter, dipped in gato lube and cookie cut.  built the first loads yesterday, smokeless 5744 to fire form the brass for swiss 1-1/2.  don'tcha think it's raining today?  dang.

Let us know on the loads - I've also got the 40-400 rcbs and two others.  Rain this afternoon here too.  Match in two weeks.

Good lookin' rifle, good choice on the sights!

she's a plain jane and that's ok by me.  been either rain or too busy to drive over to the range.  rain again today.  s'posed to be good friday, and if so i'll be there at the 200yd pit range.  smokeless loads for the rcbs 40-400 are 18, 19, 20 grains of 5744 under a .025 milk carton wad and newsprint wad, seated with no crimp.  she's bore sighted so it shouldn't take long to get on paper and shoot some groups.  but it's that smokeless junk (what he say??) just for fire forming the starline brass to load the holy black.   Cool  Cheesy  Grin

Added a cork disk under the bullet this morning, refining by 0.2gr steps - 100yds Iron sights had 4 bullets in a (4-leaf) clover-leaf pattern. (rcbs 40-350 all grooves lubed (dipped, push-through 'sized' at 0.412), 21.8gr of 4227.

I think I LIKE the CPA!

that's Great shootin', cat!

i like those cpa's, and they're located close to home.  a buddy has one in .40-70ss and it's a tack driver at 200 and 300 yards.  i need one!

my .40-65 shot real well with aa5744 and i got a few dozen fire formed cases.  loaded some with black last night, 51 grains of swiss 1-1/2f under a milk carton .025" wad and a newsprint .002" wad, with an rcbs 40-400 bps bullet that's .410" and 409 grains and rotometal 1:20 alloy, about .030" compression.  the pedi bore is .400" and grove is .408".  weather looks good for range time this thursday at the 200 yard line.
