A few firsts with my Remington Hepburn 25-21

Print Post
Today was a few firsts with my Remington Hepburn 25-21. The first time I ever breach seated a bullet, the first time I shot a Remington Hepburn and the first time I ever shot at 100 yards with cast bullets.

I didn't have much time and took just five cases and the Hepburn up to my range. I bore sighted at fifty yards and fired one shot which hit low. I then adjusted and put out my 100 yard target. After the first shot at 100 yards I adjusted again and shot the final three shots. They measured .682 and told me the rifle will shoot very well even under tough windy conditions.

This evening I match prepped some more 25-21 cases and can't wait to shoot again. I want to thank my good friend Dennis Hrusosky for selling me the fine Hepburn and setting me up with everything to get it going!

I've been involved with the small calibers for several decades and this is all new to me and I just love the old vintage rifles.

Thanks to everyone here for a fine site!!

Would like if you shared more info on the load you are using, twist, bullet weight and design, etc.

Congratulations and having Dennis in the mix you are one up on most of the new cast bullet shooters and on your way to success.

Gorgeous rifle, and a great caliber! I see a number of single shot rifles in .25-20SS, but not many in the .25-21! I have a Stevens schuetzen rifle in .25-21 and love the cartridge. I'm also curious what weight bullet you're using, and what twist the Remington barrel is in?

Thanks everyone!

A couple more firsts for me yesterday I forgot about to mention was shooting a rifle with a set trigger (it took me some time to figure that out and get used to it in my mind) it is a sweet light trigger that I'm sure Dennis worked. This is my very first Unertl scope. This 14 power scope is so clear and parallax free once set. No wonder they will always be in demand.

The rifle has a Bob Scherer cut rifle liner that Dennis installed and is 1/12 twist. Bob was known for outstanding benchrest barrels.

The lead bullets weigh a shade under 100 grains and were cast by Dennis in a Vietz mould. I used our SPL bullet coating over the these bullets that were already lubed and sized by Dennis. The load I used was the one Dennis gave me, 8.5 grains of H-4227 powder.

Check out the old box of 25-21 cartridges that someone paid a dime for! If any of you have another box for a dime please let me know!!

Hope this helps and thanks again to many here that make this site so special!

Nice rifle. I hope that you get a chance to come to Beeson Range in the Summer to shoot with us in the Quarter Bore Corps matches.

You've got a great outfit there, from a great friend.  it takes some of us a year or two to get a new-to-us rifles sorted out anywhere near as well as you have done on your first outing.   frankly I'm seriously jealous

I second that invitation to the range at Warsaw, we have a number of other shooters who come over from Ohio,  so we don't discriminate against Buckeye's  (as long as they re not wearing orange sweatshirts  LOL)  We have the Quarter-Bore group side matches in the summer but your rifle will work in any of our center fire matches.  you'll be more than welcome at any and all of them   If you have a single shot 22f we have 2 22f-only events and we shoot them at BOTH 100 and 200 yards

If you got the ASSRA home page and click on the "matches" it'll give the 2015 match schedule and there s info on the 1/4 bore specific matches as well.

Great rifle, cartridge and shooting. Wonderful to see another original Hepburn with DSTs being put to its intended use. Keep us posted as you progress. But, be aware that one of the posters above believes that "a Hepburn one could only assume it has never been known to have been a first rate bench rifle" and you will suffer accordingly. Wink Keep us posted as you progress. Should be joining you 'on the bench' with my 38cal Hepburn before the end of the year. Looking forward to some similar suffering (if I can shoot as good as you).

One of the few things I would like to have is the chance to find out if a Hepburn is good or not. Haha- I'm pretty sure I'd love it! Yours is a very sweet looking proposition, and I find it hard to believe someone wouldn't be thrilled. I envy you. Maybe someday My group of Winchesters will have to share time and space with one as neat as yours. Let us know how it goes next time out. Pat

funny how easy it is to blame the rifle/action isn't it Wink

The action is just one of a whole litany of components that have to add up to make consistently winning scores.

the guys who win, are the guys who make the least number of errors, with ALL elements of the system.  while some actions may have a design or function superiority in one aspect or another; that can be outweighed by any, part, or all of the other factors at any given match.

One thing I can feel fairly certain about. There's rarely any .25-21 cases show up on Gunbroker! Believe me, I check often.
