Elevation, Temperature and more importantly Altitude Density all make a differance in a loads efficiency as well as the bullets BC its in a constant mode of change. Same range different day and a change in the above will yeild different results on the Target. That is why one should always try to keep his load in tune, more so with the small capacity cases. Its not untypical for the jacketed bullet bench rest shooters to make small changes in their tune from one relay to the next based on the changes of the above mentioned. The larger capacity cases such as the 32-40 for Schuetzen bench work use seem to be less sensitive / more forgiving to those changes due to the increased air space. A small powder charge increase in a small capacity case can push one over the pressure limits but the same change will have little effect in a 32-40.

If you look at the people who are using the 32-20 CPA the most effectively you will see that they are loading to between 1450 and 1500 FPS. In general 4227 isn’t the best powder for short cases. AA 4100 or Ramshot Enforcer are much better powders for this application. Unfortunately they are also almost impossible to find right now. Other powders that will give good performance are AA9, AA7, Hodgdons Lil Gun, or H110. Use small rifle primers Federal 205 M or Remington 7 ½ both give good performance. You may have to adjust your mainspring screw to get a stronger strike for best results with these primers.

JackHughs ....... I'm told that a bunch of the "Modesto .32-20CPAs" have been re-chambered to .32-40; but, yours is in the safe. Have you achieved better results with the .32-40; or might we see the .32-20CPA return?

Hi,

You're correct.  I think mine is the sole surviving .32-20 CPA in the area.  And yes, it's been in the safe for several years.

I've never owned any breech-seating rifle that could match the performance of  that particular .32-20 CPA.  The problem is that it requires a lot of time and effort to produce the loads that allow the rifle to achieve it's potential and, I'm no longer willing to put in the hours.

So, even though I no longer use the rifle, it remains a benchmark for exposed-hammer rifles - rechambering is out of the question.

For those of you who are new to this forum I believe this is the benchmark Jack Hughes is reffering to and yes it was shot at 200yds/ and yes its ten shots signed and witnessed. I don't remember the official group size as was published in the Journal but it was the smallest ever recorded all though its not an official record.
