My home range is The Modesto Rifle Club and it has been noted by the out of state traveling ISSA competitors to be the toughest range they have shot at. The grounds are sand and the mirage comes off it like it does on a paved highway and there is no such thing as calm conditions / just a trigger pull day once the match starts. Also right in front of the 200 yard backers is located the raisable target frames for the prone high power matches. The butt is covered with an uncoated galvanized tin roof and the mirage coming of the roof can be deceptive of the actual mirage presented by the range. Our 100yd range is adjacent to the 200yd. range and winds coming around the corner of it are also extremely challenging. Looking at an Aerial photo of the range does not depict the actual challenges. I have not had the pleasure to shoot at Etna Green but I know those who have that have also shot at our range and they report Etna Green is an extremely more user friendly range. If this holds true it would help to explain the number of 250's shot at that range and the lack of those shot at ours.

I totally agree Jeff some are just more user friendly than others. No matter where one shoots the conditions are the same for everyone. The toughest one I have shot on is the Emerald Empire range in Springfield Oregon. Ours is a tough one but being the home range one learns most of its typical characteristics and it does give one an edge over the travelers who shoot with us.

+1 on the home range advantage.

I'm fortunate in that I can shoot at home (Hutchison Range) anytime I want. It's only about 45 minutes from home to the range. We make a practice run on the Thursday before our club match (Central Sierra Schuetzen Club) on Saturday.

I've been very fortunate to shoot at Modesto Rifle Club on a regular basis too (not sure why they put up with me). Like J Louis said, it gives you an edge over someone who shoots there only a couple times a year.

Easy ranges? I doubt there are any. Some may be easier than others though. Depends on how often you shoot there. And how much attention you pay to what is going on around you.

Jerry,

That Hutchison Range looks like a nice place to shoot.
Sort of reminds me of back home in the Owens Valley..
Gotta Try it sometime!

There are no easy ranges that is true, every range has its quirks and to shoot well you need to learn them. That is why I believe that shooters don’t do as well when they visit a new range. They don’t know the quirks and therefore don’t know where to place flags. Any 250 is an accomplishment at any range doing it multiple times shows it wasn’t a fluke. Jerry has proved himself to be an accomplished shooter and has put in the time to learn his rifle and his range.

Quite honestly this display Mr. Hartwig has been putting on is to me, right up there with the most impressive I've ever heard of. Kudos to you Mr. Hartwig and all the folks associated. It is fascinating to say the least.

He's a perty good shot too.

I think it's time for Jerry and the other Modesto area shooters to mount an assault on the Eastern hot shot shooters at Etna Green. Fuel prices are down.

Not being an expert wind reader, Hardly ever do we have a direct cross wind, if we do it is easterly, most are quartering.
NE is about the worst due to some low wet land just past the backstop, the cooler dampness causes nutty stuff to go on, lots of turbulence.

North wind comes right over the backstop and gives an impression of higher velocity nearer the targets, lots of vertical bullet strikes. It is like "what the hell caused that I had a good hold" etc
NW comes between large tall oak trees, lots of barrel rolls, you get a lot of.."damn it went right where I held comments."

Then a SW will come along, then a SE, maybe some South.

Not very shooter friendly...........Lake Michigan to the NW causes stuff and Lake Erie to the NE, lots of lake effect in winter and summer.

Cody, I'm shooting a 690 gr bullet over 100gr Swiss FF. Timed event at 200 yards. Storm blows in, huge wind gust starting to build from the left. Can see and feel it coming, a big big one. 7 seconds left, I hold on the lower right corner of the target frame to the left of mine. Boom, Spotter shouts good shot! A 23 at three oclock. Followed by, but not good enough! My man scored a 25 at three oclock. Kenny Wasserberger again.
It's wild in the West.

Gentlemen,

Thank you all for the congratulations, praise, kudos, and compliments. They are all greatly appreciated.

There are plenty of excellent shooters in our group, and plenty more elsewhere in the USA and Canada. I learned everything I know about Schuetzen shooting from the guys I shoot with, not on my own. I am indebted to them all for the help, encouragement, and knowledge that they have provided and shared with me.

I just happened to get on the right roller coaster. I have no idea how far this ticket will take me or what kind of ride I'm on, I just hope it doesn't end in a sudden plummet.

Regards,
JerryH

There is a lot to be said about your fellow shooters and the advice and ideas that flow back and forth. Modesto has raised a good crop of talented shooters who all learn from each other and improve. That is what I loved about shooting at Western NY in the 80s and 90s. There were guys like Marlin Bassett and Ken Hall and Ken Brisen who gave their time to teach us how to shoot and you could pick up a lot in the bull sessions and at dinner after the match. Success breeds success.
