Anyone using 777 or Pyrodex for BPCR Silhouette?

Hey Folks,

It's reached the point that obtaining real black powder is nearly impossible for a reasonable cost in my area.  I can't have it shipped to me, and can't drive anywhere near here and pick it up.

So - looking for advice on Hogden 777 or Prodex Select loads for .45-70 for BPCR silhouette shooting (out to 500 meters). Anyone out there using fake black powder?  How do you ensure a consistent match-grade load if you can't weigh the powder? What do you use for wads, etc.

Thanks,

-Nick

Pyrodex is the ONLY legal substitute for Black Powder.

Hodgdon 777, Blackhorn 209, etc are illegal to use for BPCR Silhouette.

I had this question answer by Barry Ranney (Program Coordinator Silhouette / Black Powder Competitive Shooting Division) last year concerning Blackhorn 209.

Here is his reply

"Unfortunately no it cannot be used as a substitute.  Per Rule 3.4 (D) of the Silhouette Rule book Cartridges must be loaded with Black Powder or Pyrodex only.

For your reference the Silhouette Rule book can be found online at the following location:"

You can weigh pyro. It will scale lighter than by volume measure.

Throw a charge by volume onto your scale and use that as your ratio.

I just threw a 100gr volume charge onto a scale and got 70.1gr giving you a ratio of 0.701 x BP charge.

I have no knowledge of putting it in compression though

Just a heads up on Pyro. I find it is much less forgiving as far as corrosiveness. Be extra diligent in your cleaning routine.

most of the substitutes leave burnt residues that are more corrosive than BP fouling and much harder to completely remove.  Frequent, intense and thoroughly complete cleaning are mandatory if you value your rifles and are FORCED to use a substitute.
The American Long Rifle Assoc has long tested the substitutes as they come on the market by burning measured quantities on polished steel gun barrel alloy plates and letting the residue stand for differing periods of time and measuring the speed and depth of corrosion and the resistance the residue has to norm barrel cleaning techniques.
The ALR website is prolific with warnings NOT to use ANY of the substitutes in valuable muzzle loaders.
I have had a couple of kinds given to me over the years,  it goes on my lawn as fertilizer.

Only Pyrodex is legal in BPCRS. I used it for a season but had to run a wet patch through quite often as it would crust up toward the muzzle.
Blackhorn 209 is a spectacular powder for an Inline muzzle loader. Very accurate for a five shot group without cleaning. Hardly any smoke in a cartridge gun. And it's EXPENSIVE.
777 is very powerful but produces a hard crusty fouling which hurts accuracy.
American pioneer is almost self lubricating. I use a lot in Cowboy action shooting where it will allow a revolver cylinder to still rotate easily after 60 rounds, without cleaning. No other substitute or real black would. It also cleans easily with standard bore cleaners, hot water is not necessary.

Not only a  waste of time puts your rifle in jeopardy, stuff is very corrosive.  Sorry to say if you can't buy real black powder better to use Smokeless.

NRA Rule ? you don't need rules if you can't buy powder. Use what's available.

TexasMac posted a very good list of BP suppliers on this forum few weeks ago

It's a 200 mile drive for me to get reliable supplies of BP. We group our purchases, buy together. Our guy will sell 50 lbs at a time, some sort of limit that can be carried without permits I understand

Thanks everyone!  Pyrodex sounds like more trouble than it's worth, so I'll figure something out to get black powder.

I live in the City and County of San Francisco, in the great state of California. SF passed a law forbidding the shipping and manufacture of ammunition and ammunition components a few years ago. The law has actually been overturned, but just try to convince the suppliers of that. Cabella's even refused to ship me snap caps. I wish I were kidding.

There are no reliable suppliers of black powder within driving distance that I could find.  Anyway thanks for your help - I'll work something out.
