1863 Sharps 50/70 Conversion

I just picked up a like new 1863 Sharps Rifle, carbine version. It is one of the conversions from percussion to 50/70 and here is the incredible part it was $400.00. I feel like I won the lottery. I will post pics tonight. I pulled it apart and after cleaning off tons of dust it does not look shot since the conversion. the breech block still has full case colors.

I will take some pics tonight I could not believe how clean it was after I got all the dust off.  I was shocked at the price when I bought it and even more shocked when I cleaned it up.

That 1863 Sharps looks in exceptional condition especially if that finish is all original. You do realise that with a find like that you have used up at least a decade of good luck. It goes with the territory. One thing, you certainly weren't robbed. Cheesy

I tried to take a pic of the rifling but could not get a good one.  It is a 6 groove and looks like it never was shot.

Some of the 6 groove ones have rimfire firing pins.  Did you check that?  Could be a good reason it wasn't shot much.  Also, the bores on the unlined conversions are oversize for standard .50-70 rounds.  I had one many years ago (my first Sharps) and used a heel bullet designed for the (Erma Werke) Gallagher carbine repros.  The Army found accuracy to be poor with the .52 caliber unlined bores and had Springfield bore them out and put standard .515"  3 groove liners in.

john, I did not even think to check if it was a rimfire. I will have to pull the breech block tomorrow and check.  I still have to slug the bore.

If it does happen to be a rimfire, it's the rarest form of conversion, though I'm not sure collector values reflect that.  But yours will be valuable just because of condition. And, the centerfire breechblock will drop right in if you happen to have one to swap. (model 1874 blocks won't work due to the much higher firing pin and hammer nose on the conversions.)
